Soil Association and Peak Oil

Post by rightee »

Hi,

Received a letter through the door this morning from the Soil Association.

Written in large type on the front of the envelope is: "Peak Oil: Why your food is at risk". Then "Danger Ahead" with a big road sign type exclamation mark dripping oil.

Has anyone else received this? They also have a Peak Oil appeal section on their website.

This is quite a big association to actually mutter the words Peak Oil, and hopefully this push will see it move into the mainstream

I haven't opened the letter as its for my ex who is a member of the soil association ;-)

That?s good to see. David Fleming was chairman of the Soil Association over a decade ago so they have certainly been peak oil aware at a senior level for a long time.
By 2021, it has been estimated that we will have to adjust to a supply of just 50% of today's volumes. Under that scenario, many of the services that we currently take for granted - cheap flights, cheap imports and global distribution of food - will be radically curtailed.

Impressive words from a large, respectable organisation, a 50% reduction in just 15 years though! That sounds like a very steep decline, but their aims are excellent:
"to create a new, localised food culture that will deliver long-term quality of life in place of the old dynamic of unrestrained globalisation and short-termist exploitation"

It's a shame that they make the usual 'headline' error:
What happens to our food when the oil runs out?
