Jeez you lot are hiliarious.

I studied German and I know a lot more about the place and its culture than you lot do, and frankly Germany has a lot more to be said for it than smug, greedy, atomised, complacent, reactionary Britain.

But all that matter is having someone to look down on, isn't it? f***ing tiny-minded philistine arseholes, don't imagine your misguided superiority complex will be much help in the years to come.

Come on L. I don't look down on any race. The homogenisation experiment is the real example of tiny-mindedness.

Jesus, here you go again, proving my point.

There's more to Germany than the f***ing Nazis you know; read a bit of history and literature, learn a bit of culture.

Above all, note how they've not been slaughtering innocent people in the Middle East during the past decade under the shameful pretext of humanitarianism.

I'm talking about the euro experiment, emphasising Sleeper's comments about the political failure. It's the so-called 'leaders' I have problems with, not the ordinary people. Crikey, I even like Americans! Not so their self-appointed guides.

I'm hardly singling out Germans - like I implied, I don't want to be Greek. I want the Greeks to be Greek. I want the Germans to be Germans.

How does that prove I'm a "f***ing tiny-minded philistine arsehole"?

Are you sure you're not German, Ludwig?

I think Ludwig may have mis-understood the meaning behind some of the posts and jumped to their defense a little prematurely..... it can happen to us all. :)

But I agree the countries are all different and have good points and bad points. It would be pretty easy to go around practically all the countries in Europe and point out their idiosyncracies and their foibles.

I suppose that was one of the main challenges the EU was actually set-up to try to harmonize to a degree, such that we no longer wished to go to war over mis-understandings.

Don't vote for Ludwig to be prime minister whatever you do! :) ;)

Sorry, I flew off the handle there.

That's a new one Ken - not.

I'm a Germanophile and I make no apology for that. The Germans have their faults, and I would never claim they are as lovable as the Italians or the Swedes. But lovability isn't everything. Since I first visited Germany at the age of 15 I have liked the place, and liked the general attitude of the people, who believe in common sense and sharing the load and aren't obsessed with individual rights like the English.

I grew up in a period in which (West) Germany was our strong ally and (hard to believe it now I know) quite a hip country to like; during the Cold War, in many ways it was where everything was happening. That feeling of affinity with Germany has stayed with me, in fact has grown with my learning more about German culture, particularly classical music and literature.

To some extent I feel the same about France; ever since I started learning foreign languages I have felt myself to be as much European as British.

But then unlike most people I'm not scared of the "other".

Germany has no interest in the UK, but it will be our enemy in the coming World War by virtue of its alliance with Russia. The die has already been cast, and there is no chance of Germany and Britain ever fighting on the same side again, in case that is a worry to anyone.

Britain has as much moral credit entering the coming World War, as Hitler had entering the last one. It's us who've been destroying the infrastructure and lives of millions of innocent people in the Middle East for our own gain,

I don't believe Britain is a better country than all others simply because I happen to have been born here. I know that before long to say that will be treasonous, but for the moment I stand by it.

Anti-German propaganda is now entering full flow in our government-controlled media, and needless to say all the sheeple are buying into it, plus some people who I never realised were sheeple till now.

I know an Indian woman who divorced her husband because he was, in her words, "Too Indian".

Good post ludwig. I think people look pretty ignorant when they talk about national stereotypes, based on nothing but the tabloid press opinion of those nationalities.

Indian men are not renowned for their feminist views...

(I nearly married into an Indian family).

I worked for a software company run by a German/American. The company policy was to employ as many different nationalities as possible, I was the second Brit. I think we managed 13 nationalities between 20 staff at one point. It went the way of many small startups, bought out by venture capital, puffed up in the dot com boom, made a mint on IPO and then sank without trace. Boss effectively retired at 40.

Boss was American when in Germany, and German when in America.

Au contraire, mein herr. He is exactly what Britain needs as a leader. There are far too many optimists in government.
