Greece to hold European debt deal referendum

My employer was 'rescued' by a larger organisation near two years ago. We had just about pulled round into operating profit when the larger organisation went under, having just sold our one major asset.
The administrators hope to keep us trading and sold off as a going concern, I'm not that hopeful.
I'm not too concerned personally, we have some income from property and a lot of savings and family I can sponge off as a last resort.
Cambridge is still recruiting IT staff. My main problem is being 10 years out of date in my skills.

Hi Ralph, I don't post that much, but when you say your IT skills are out of date, what do you mean?
I would say that you need to get into virtualisation technologies like VMWare, Hyper V, ZEN, and KVM (open source virtual machines). That is what I am doing at the moment. It's not that difficult; you just need some time for training.
I got made redundant last year, and was out of work for 6 months. I upskilled into the above; I've had loads of work since getting into this. If you want any further info, just let me know.

Good luck Ralph, but returning to the thread topic:
So it looks like consulting the electorate is a bad career move.BBC News wrote:Greek leaders at crisis talks in Athens have agreed to form a new coalition government, the president's office says.
Beleaguered PM George Papandreou will step aside and his successor will be chosen at talks in the morning, the statement said.

Doubt this mob will last long.maudibe wrote:Aye Biff.
And his likely successor is:
a/ The finance minister who said that the plebs are too ignorant to have a vote on something so important.
b/ The former chairman of the Greek National Bank.
Unfreckin-believable.
Lets face it, this bunch of Greek politicans have brought their country to a almighty mess, does anyone think they can now turn things around?
No chance.

All this is just a prelude to the time when all of us in the West will have to confront the issue of how we pay off our debts. It will come to the Greeks soon and, despite all the bailouts, they will have to pay for the life of Reilly that they have been living, and paying for on tick, for the last ten or twenty years.
If that confrontation with reality doesn't break the system some other country will then have to go through the same process. If that doesn't break the system it will carry on until even us and the US will have to pay up.
I don't think it will get that far because the system will break catastrophically after the first few have gone. The full horror of the situation will permeate the markets and the banking system, reality will dawn, and all confidence in a future of growth will be lost.

Going OT again, it appears my situation is more Greek than I realised.
I am informed by a reliable co-worker, that the directors of our parent organisation, having sold our major asset, used the funds to pay the debts for which they were personally liable, invested the cash balance in the directors' pension fund, and then declared the organisation insolvent.
Needless to say, to say more would be to incur legal wrath, but we do appear to have been *ankered.
[edit]
I am hearing that the situation is slightly more nuanced. However, it is clear that the directors acted in their personal financial interest, ahead of that of my co-workers.
Like the Greek story, it keeps changing hour on hour...
I really must dust off that CV...

Do directors ever do anything else??RalphW wrote: I am hearing that the situation is slightly more nuanced. However, it is clear that the directors acted in their personal financial interest, ahead of that of my co-workers.

It appears not.Ludwig wrote:Do directors ever do anything else??RalphW wrote: I am hearing that the situation is slightly more nuanced. However, it is clear that the directors acted in their personal financial interest, ahead of that of my co-workers.
The trouble is that once they get into a position of power (like politicians) they then abuse that power to feather their own nests, despite everybody else losing out. It makes me sick.
I happen to be a Director (of a very small company) and it pisses me off seeing this kind of thing going on. It seems to happen just because they can. They seem to think there are no repercussions.......
I have the view that the fat cats time is up and they need to be taught a lesson.... I'll leave the rest to your imagination. But if they keep getting away with it, they'll keep doing it........ Needless to say I don't feel I fall into the generalisations made above, but in general, power corrupts!
Real money is gold and silver
Yeah, i'll second that comrades.
It is all very well making clever posts on powerswitch but how are we going to get rid of these evil directors. I heard that one ate a baby!
These awful people who walk among us, you would not be able to distinguish them from ourselves, they look like us, breathe like us,support families and provide employment like....... forget that last bit.
Yes, down with directors. Make them wear a little 'D' on their coats whenever they go out in public. Only thing worse than a director, two directors. No, it is buy to let landlords! jumped up little oiks. BURN THEM, BURN THEM I SAY!
