Stocking up on tinned stuff?

What changes can we make to our lives to deal with the economic and energy crises ahead? Have you already started making preparations? Got tips to share?

Google up haybox or retained heat cooking. You can cook with no heat input at all if you insulate the pot well enough. I use a big old bean bag filled with polystyrene beads. Today I made a fridge soup, got it to just boiling, took it off the gas and wrapped it in the bean bag - perfectly cooked and at the perfect temperature an hour later. Saved all the gas that would have been needed to cook it on the stove.

Quite the list but without quantities and calorie equivalents your readers have no way to access the viability of your stockpile.
For example you list syrup? What kind and how much do you have on hand or want to have.
A bottle of "Aunt Jamima" 8 Oz. Or ten gallons of "Vermont grade A "real Maple?
Makes quite a bit of difference. Also your choices of what to have in bulk as apposed to what you feel you need to have ,just an example of ,will show you how well you have compared real consumption and need to your storage capacity and the potential real need.
I'm not saying that I have a fully stocked doom pantry or that your list isn't complete, only that without some figures ( real or for Internet debating purposes) it is hard to discuss what and how much you might want to add to have the ideal stash.

Hi VST.... merely comparing to the previous list, which also did not spec brands or quantities... life is too short to do that and post it :)

Any stocks are better than none.
More is better.
What if the rioters burn distribution depots ?
Or render areas too dangerous for deliveries, or too dangerous for customers to venture to the remaining shops ?

Please keep general remarks re the riots in the thread on the subject, not here.

The present situation does however underline the importance of keeping stocks.
Most people probably thought of food stocks against extreme weather, industrial disputes, or a general PO induced collapse, not riots.

Perhaps not now in the summer when you would be better off weeding the garden but a bit of accounting on a rainy or off day will give you some idea of how long you could go without outside inputs. A five gallon pail full of rice ,pasta and beans will provide enough to get you through almost any storm or other short term event but a long term outlook that goes through the next years harvest requires quite a bit more.
I like the round figure of a million calories per person per year. It allows for quite a bit of waste and other losses.
It never ceases to amaze me how many people cannot go even a single day without a trip to the store.

I have food & fuel too last a yr I reckon.

Of course zombies will no doubt raid the doomstead well before the food running out becomes an issue. Maybe thats when an extra hidden stash @ a secondary location would be useful

There won't be rioters, looters or zombies, what you'll get will be human locusts.
They'll pick each location clean, the more violent ones will lead the charge and get the best plunder, the camp followers will pick up the leftovers. When the survivors look around them and see everything is gone, they'll join the horde in a desperate bid for food. The ones that don't will just sit down and wait to die.

Well depending on what size tin ,you have probably about two and a half days food there. You might want to add some rice or pasta to the stash. :)

That is certainly a reasonable amount to have at hand.
What are you going to buy next month that you don't currently have enough of to make you feel secure?

I'm low on mackerel and herring, also I need some more crackers and oat cakes.

I did get 80 odd granola bars, assorted, but really would like to find a good supplier of protein bars.
