Thanks for the info & the invite. Sadly I can't make the 24th as it's my daughters birthday, I'll probably be attending a screening of Ice Age 2!.
I'd be interested in other events though.
The Cuba situation is an interesting one though, and it has some valuable lessons for a small community wanting to prepare for the coming decline, however on a national basis there are some big differences between us & them.
1 - We have further to fall - Cuba's economy wasn't very oil intensive before the blockade and it's people were generally very low energy users.
We on the other hand are high energy users and addicited to our labour saving devices and couch potato lifestyles.
2 - Cuba was & is a totalitarian regime with a strong leader.
We on the other hand have weak leaders and are big on individual human rights. Cubans had to cut their calorie consumption by half to adjust, if the supermarket shelves start emptying I can't see an orderly and fair transition.
The scary bit will be when the population of England is going through the cahnge curve from 'I'm entitled to my way of life' to 'I'd better get used to living like the Cubans!'

At least there will be plenty of room to queue. We won't need the car park to park our cars any more. I could see the car park becoming the focal point of the community with people buying, selling and bartering while they're waitng for the next shipment of food to be delivered.
My work involves organising supplies for NHS Trusts in the North of England. Some of these come from as far away as Malaysia. I can see us having to do a similar thing for hospitals once we start getting disruption.

hi guys , ive just joined this forum , been looking for quite some time now so am i glad to find you !!!
I've been into sustainability/enviromentalisim most of my life now even done the raod protest thing back in the 90's . now in my early 30's i can look back on my youth and still laugh. oh the niavety !!!
And thats my point i'd like to make here. Writing to your mp, sigining petitions spreading the word etc. etc isn't going to do jack. Sorry guys but thats the truth had the disapointment to show for it and a septic sore over twyford downs.
What we nned to do is create communitys like this spread and share infomation.
Beyond that we need to start linking up and creating sustainable working communitys in the real world.

I,ve got a3 bed house and 3/4 of an acre in Guisborough. And Unlimited server space.
Would like to get off the hydrocarbon life support as soon as possible, live on my own now (sort of) I 've been reclaiming bits for a while now, but could do with a bit of tech assistance.
I,m a great believer in leading from the front and would like to convert this property into a sustainable dwelling. Use it as a showcase. Ive got the rayburn but need a lesson in raising the lintel in the fireplace., Got a few 40 gal tanks and an old central heating pump, but know jack shit about plumbing or irrigation.
Don't have a tv myself but saw an episode of that series with the gadgee with a monster 'tasch' and his 3 grand wind turbine and composting toilet, and I thought, 'yeah, whoopie F--k, now do it on a minimum wage.'

See this first. The planners may have taken ten years to get rid of these two hundred travellers but they have a whole Political Correctness/Minority Group industry behind them. You, on your own, will be easy to pick off unless you have a viable agricultural plan in place and the money to implement it and a lot of luck.
How do I know? I've been there and got the t-shirt (and the house) and it took a stroke of luck for me to get Planning Permission and a wife in a well paying job to get the house. Just don't burn your bridges behind you as you'll most likely end up back where you started as most people who try this do. Some even end up way below where they started.
If you do get some land make sure it's more than 14 acres/5.7ha and the bit where you want to build any agricultural buildings is more than 400m away from any housing. The ag. buildings should also be more than 30m away from any housing for yourself. This is because you will have to prove that constant supervision of the land is required and about the only way of doing this is to keep animals which would also require housing. You can build that animal housing on an agricultural notice (not a planning application as such) if those previous points are in place. The land should also have an existing entrance onto a road with adequate site lines for the speed of traffic and classification of the road. It shouldn't be green belt land or in a National Park or other designated area.
