A reminder that fossil fuel use reduction is not enough.

It's too late for that.

No, you also need social cohesion, a shared sense of mission, informal social controls, willingness to forego individual gratification for the greater good...Japan, with its largely homogeneous society and strong cultural emphasis on harmony might achieve this sort of saving, the UK hasn't a hope.
