So our thread title has a new double meaning. FWIW I am forced to agree with those accused of trolling with regards to the original subject. The video is fairly shallow, one sided and presents people like Kunstler as an expert - a fellow who has predicted TEOTWAWKI on a monthly basis since before the astrologer nutcase closed down his site. This kind of thing is to the extreme embarrassment of everyone who is trying to understand the nature of the quicksand our civilization is slowly sinking into. I don't want new people to see that - they'll think we're loonies just like RGR does.
Banning Trolls
I do often fear posting any of my own thoughts on here, as there seems to be a culture of bickering and strongly worded replies. If there was a spirit of collaboration and co-operation, more members might feel they could post their ideas and thoughts. I am a member on about 5 forums/fora, and this one is definitely different. My posts here are always just links to articles for general discussion. Thanks to those members who are friendly and helpful, though.

We're bombarded with disinformation every day. It's not even much of a secret.
That would be a bit of a giveaway, wouldn't it?If TPTB wanted to stop peak oil information getting out they'd hack every site and denial-of-service the whole lot.
Paying people to post crap on forums would cost them peanuts, even if it's not massively effective. Big organisations typically have small budgets for left-field activities, on the basis that you never know, something might stick.

I cant ban trolls, and if I could do so, I would not without a consenus being reached.biffvernon wrote:Indeed but I'm not a mod so I think you pmd the wrong guyAurora wrote:For what it's worth folks, I would still be a regular contributor if it wasn't for the likes of RGR, JSD and An Inspector Calls.
They have been a divisive influence on this forum for some time, a fact that I raised with Biff in a PM (to no avail) some months ago.
Cheers, Aurora.
There is clearly a substantial number people calling for the trolls to be banned and some who have left the forum or are saying they will if things don't change. We do seem to have reached a crisis.
And yet there seems to be complete silence from the mods, whoever they are. Can we have some reasoned explanation and action from the mods please before the forum dies and victory is conceded to the trolls?
The site Admins CAN ban trolls.
I can delete posts and I am deleting a great many in this thread.
Including those that consist of of insults, those that contain thinly disguised expletives, and those that are replying to insults, and also those that may be acceptable in themselves, but that no longer make sense due to the deletion of previous posts.

Well they should be able to see the video, read the post and make their own mind up.AndySir wrote:So our thread title has a new double meaning. I hope you all enjoy the ride.
I'm surprised there are any posts left after you've done all that. Seriously though, this admission is leaving me wondering whether to bother posting on these forums. And that's from someone who's been on the receiving end of some pretty malign expletive-ridden abuse (which wasn't removed).adam2 wrote:I can delete posts and I am deleting a great many in this thread.

Of course they're not, but as long as they can keep up the possibility of PO not being real they're doing a good job.DominicJ wrote:And I'm sure BP bases its investment decisisions on the opinion of powerswitch...It makes sense if you work for a company that installs and maintains pipelines, and requires investor confidence in continuing oil supplies in order to secure funding.
If they suddenly stopped churning out their propaganda more people might start believing in it and we could have the biggest panic ever seen, and all that that would entail.
They HAVE to keep doing it no matter how futile.

My general experience is that the forum goes through these regular existential crises once every six months. Members say they are leaving, things calm down and very quietly the ones who said they would never return come back.
By and large the hands off approach of the moderators works well and it would be a shame if things changed and 'right-on' factions started demanding that anybody whose views they disagreed with are expelled from the forum.
I have a theory that the massive hysteria generated by the likes of RGR is actually a form of control mechanism. Overwhelmed by the magnitude of PO, individuals are resorting to demanding explusions of rogue individuals as a means of asserting control over such a multi-faceted, abstract and disturbing issue.
Indeed, as PO becomes a more 'real' presence in the years ahead among the general public, I would expect to see more of this kind of societal behaviour - popular targets being politicians, oilmen, traders, bankers, greens, PO activists and so on.
My take on the issue.

Its so obvious. People that are making money out of business as usual are bound to want things to stay as they are, and to spread misinformation to suit their own ends.biffvernon wrote:Ian Enting writes at

When I was a child if my mother said don't eat too many sweets they're bad for your teeth, and I happened to stumble upon an article that stated that sweets are actually good for childrens teeth, I would have thought it was Christmas,
Even though it was lies.
