Not sterile, but clones.
Apples won't breed true. If you plant a Cox's Orange Pippin apple seed, you won't get Cox's OPs off the resulting tree. Apples are propagated by grafting slips onto wild apple rootstock.
So the apples that grow from discarded seeds are random and sometimes rather wonderful varieties. There's one in our local park which grows apples of incredible sweetness and depth of flavour, but which are only the size of a mandarin. I preserve them in syrup.
