Nuclear accident follows Japanese earthqauke

Is nuclear fission going to make a comeback and plug the gap in our energy needs? Will nuclear fusion ever become energetically viable?

How about a lunar rover? That could cope with any terrain, and I'm sure it could be kitted out for the job within a couple of weeks.
This isn't terrain. It's a mangled mess.

There's been a bit of debate about the robots they are using - some pretty unsophisticated jobs and not the posh, radiation hardened, fit for purpose kit that was on offer from the Germans.

This is, far and away, the best review of the Fukushima situation I've seen.

Clear explanations, great diagrams, photos, links to videos and other sites.

Caution, numbers are involved.

Ok, so it's 167 pages long, but you'll learn stuff on just a quick skim through. More graphic than text.

Some recent screen shots from the Fukushima webcam are creating some excitement. It's dark but there seems to be a fire and a lot of smoke, probably from #3 reactor.

video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BN0teWj ... dded#at=44

Edit: It seems likely that the clouds seen in the video are of steam resulting from water pumped by the big Putzmeister concrete engine. Webcam at dawn shows its stopped.

Japan's prime minister has told a power company to halt operations at another nuclear plant due to fears an earthquake could trigger a new crisis.

Naoto Kan said three reactors at Hamaoka plant should be suspended until new safety measures were put in place.

Experts said the chances of a powerful quake hitting the area were high.

Addressing a news conference on Friday, Mr Kan said the five-reactor Hamaoka plant, operated by the Chubu Electric Power Company, had been ordered to suspend two running reactors and a third shut for a regular inspection.

The Hamaoka plant, which lies 200km (120 miles) south of Tokyo, is in Shizuoka prefecture - an area which seismologists say is overdue for an earthquake.

"The relevant authorities, including the science ministry, have shown that the possibility of a magnitude 8.0 earthquake hitting the area of the Hamaoka plant within the next 30 years is 87%," Mr Kan said.

"This is a decision made for the safety of the people when I consider the special conditions of the Hamaoka plant."

Mr Kan said the government would work to prevent power supply problems arising from the decision.

He said safety measures, including the construction of sea walls, would need to be implemented at the plant before operations resumed.

That's just so typical of big business in Japan. Everything must have cute mascots and websites. Hell, even the Self Defense forces have cute mascots.

I don't know if this has been linked to yet, but found a interesting video documentary. Shown in the UK on C4 back in 1995 apparently.

Those films must be a lie! People don't die in the nuclear power industry! The Inspector told us so. And he knows, or at least he tells us he does!

Thanks for those links, Ippoippo. That film, and the cute little vid I posted, may represent the two sides of Japan, one all rather too nice, the other a much darker story.

ROFL!!!
Off Topic : Just goes to show how far automated translation has to go when you start writing in non-standard dialects or styles! It was meant to read something like "Awwww cute [spoken kinda of like 'cuuuuuute']. Such a cute website".

Hmm, wasn't my intention when I posted the links to 'Nuclear Ginza'. I'd just found it via another site and was planning on sticking the link here anyway.
However, now that you've said it, yeah Japan can be like that.
The bit that grabbed me was when the chap's wife was happy that the 'company' had cleaned his work clothes. At the time, she thought it was a good thing because the company was looking after them. So naive, and it was sad to see how she knew how naive and trusting she was at the time.

Back to the serious stuff.
Radiation level in No. 1 reactor building up to 700 millisieverts {per hour}

Chubu Electric decides to suspend operations at Hamaoka plant

Well at least they can get into No. 1 to measure the radiation.
‘‘An area with a double-digit millisievert level, let alone three-digit figures, is quite tough as a working environment. So we have to do the work by using some shielding,’’ Hidehiko Nishiyama, a spokesman for the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, told a press conference.

As for ways to shield against radiation, TEPCO is considering making a metal tunnel for people to walk through, or using some lead sheeting, according to Nishiyama.
The fools! That is prior disclosure. They can't patent it now.

Meanwhile, Japan's ability to generate electricity is further compromised...
The utility serving central Japan around Nagoya made the decision at an extraordinary board meeting, the second of its kind since Saturday’s inconclusive one, after discussing ways to ensure a stable supply of power in summer in the event the company fulfills the request.

‘‘We decided at today’s extraordinary board meeting to suspend operation of the Nos. 4 and 5 reactors and postpone restarting of the No. 3 reactor,’’ Chubu Electric President Akihisa Mizuno said at a news conference.
I'm hippest, no really.
