Nuclear accident follows Japanese earthqauke

Is nuclear fission going to make a comeback and plug the gap in our energy needs? Will nuclear fusion ever become energetically viable?

If I was close to a nuclear incident, I'd need a road map to find the quickest way out of there :D.

That's why I'd use a map rather than sat nav. I'd find the back roads no one else knew about :D.

A 'roadmap' is always wishful thinking. The US government has them. We have them at work. They're all bollocks. TEPCO's plans are just aspirations - the Bbc reports say TEPCO "hope" to do this within three months and "hope" to do that within six months. It's just wishful thinking.
Robots record high radiation levels at Japan reactors

Remote-controlled robots are being used at the quake-hit Fukushima nuclear plant to measure radiation levels.

The readings from two reactor buildings showed a "harsh environment" for humans to work in, complicating efforts to stabilise the damaged reactors.

It comes a day after the plant operator said it expected to bring the crisis under control by the end of the year.

Some of the road map's problems are discussed by Asahi here:

Multiple levels of wishful thinking abound.

Nice, 54000m3 of radioactive pog. With the average size of a large lorry tanker being around 30m3 that's 1800 tanker fulls...roughly.

Welcome Mr Brightside.

Your location is "on the fells". That isn't the fells that are still producing radioactive sheep after the Chernobyl incident, is it?

Thankyou kinneal.

'On the fells' as in i'm a fell runner, i was initially concerned that significant amounts of radioactive material from Fukushima might end up in the places i run but it's turning out to be more localised...so far.

I understand that certain parts of the hills are indeed still radioactive after Chernobyl, but to what extent i'm not sure. I heard the incident might have been responsible for the birth of black Swaledales but i'm not sure if this is just an old wives tale.

Japan makes Fukushima a no-go zone
Japan bans entry into Fukushima evacuation zone

Japan has made it illegal to enter a 20km (12-mile) evacuation zone around the stricken Fukushima nuclear reactor.

People were urged to leave the area shortly after the 11 March earthquake and tsunami crippled the plant, but the order was not enforced by law.

Cooling systems were knocked out by the twin disasters and radiation has been leaking from the plant.

Brief re-entry will be allowed to the area's 80,000 former residents to collect belongings.

It is not clear how many people are still living in the evacuation zone, but reports said police had counted at least 60 families.

After the disaster the government also declared a wider 10km zone around the 20km evacuation area where people should either stay indoors or leave.

It later recommended that people also evacuate parts of that area as well.

"The plant has not been stable," said the chief government spokesman, Yukio Edano.
