Geneva motor show: Renault showcases electric Twizy

No shortage of new product on Renault's Geneva motor show stand, none of which - not even the four concepts on display - came close to eclipsing the prospect of its production ready Twizy.

With an electric motor this two-seater, four-wheel scooter/go-kart type device is as brilliantly eccentric as we've come to expect from one of the few manufacturers still willing to put daring designs into production.

Climb aboard and the driver gets a steering wheel, column stalks and just three buttons; one for hazards, one for drive and one for reverse (you engage neutral by hitting the latter two simultaneously). The passenger sits directly behind with their legs either side of the driver's seat.

The Twizy will be in the UK at the beginning of next year. Prices are yet to be announced, but in France the base level model (which we won't get) will cost about 7,000 Euros plus a monthly 45 Euro battery lease charge.

Let nobody suppose that simple, inexpensive arrangements are faulty because primitive. If constructed correctly and in line with natural laws they are not only right, but preferable to fancy complicated devices.

Better name than Bulli, I think. Just.
