Spot price for natural gas, back over 50p a unit.

If we get a winter like the last one, we will run oit of long term storage, unless we drastically increase LNG imports.

Where's the Gulf Stream at the moment? I gather that its behaviour has been rather unusual over the past couple of winters, hence the cold weather.

It will certainly be rather curious if we have another major freeze and 2010 also turns out to be globally the warmest year.

Apparently when we get cold air from the Arctic, it gets replaced with warm air from the Pacific. The Arctic gets warmer while we get colder. This happened quite a lot last winter. There are not so many thermometers in the arctic where the warming is happening, but lots in Europe where the cold weather is. Result: the planet is warming more than we have measured.

We are getting cold weather simply due to the synoptics of the current meterological setup, with blocked Atlantic, with the weather coming from Scandinavia and Russia. The Arctic is not warm - you need to stop spreading untruths....

Err...Gulf Stream or Jet Stream? I think the Gulf Stream packing-up scare has, at least for the mo, been laid to rest. The Jet Stream has been behaving oddly these last couple of years, I haven't seen anyone claim CC as a cause, but then I haven't searched too hard.

the Jet Stream is blowing a north wester over the Bay of Biscay at the moment which is keeping the Atlantic air away from us and giving the Artic air stream.

I would expect nothing less from the denialist faction of this forum. My post was, of course, a gross oversimplification but sums up what a paper, a link to which I can't be bothered to find at the moment (go search ClimateProgress or RealClimate) said recently.

Take home message: The planet is warming and when mid latitudes show a cooling this can be hiding a greater overall warming.

Snow hope isn't part of the denialist faction of this forum.

The people who compile global weather statistics take into account the relative "lack of thermometers" in certain places.

I wasn't necessarily referring to gulf stream shutting down. If we have a run of cold winters even as the planet gets warmer then there may be some other reason for it. The gulf stream shutting down was just one example of how climate change is likely to cause different effects in different places. Not everywhere will get warmer. Some will get drier or wetter or colder.

The media certainly do not take this into account in their reporting, as was seen last winter.

But the Arctic is warming and data on how much is limited.

Arctic sea ice extent is once again at a record low for the time of year.
