We've just spent all day making a new chook run - whole family involved- you can't beat a day doing something practical.
We started out in April with 6 chickens and since then have increased their number by 2. The initial 6 are all different breeds. The intention was to get 2 breeds as they were better layers but the lesson I learnt was not to take kids to the farm to select them... or you come home with the mish-mash of breeds we ended up withnexus wrote:Welcome postie (are you a postie?)except for some chickens... so pop round for scrambled eggs after TEOTWAWKI...)
Chickens are great. What have you got?

The other two I bought as fertilized eggs on ebay, popped them in an incubator for 21 days and managed to hatch 2 of the 6 eggs. They're now almost full grown.
I used to be a postman, I'm not anymore.
Postie, @ the kids choosing the hens!
Of couse, the beauty of loads of breeds is that they look different and so the kids can name them all.
The downside of that is when the fox gets one you can't fudge which one is now missing!
However, allowing a few random fertilised eggs to be hatched when one of the hens goes broody is also fun as you can then play the great game of "guess the parents"!
Ask me how I know all this! Have fun

This is my first post, so Hi all
I first heard of PO about 3 years ago. Like a lot of other people, I was directed to LATOC, and then another site called Wolf At The Door. I then picked up this site through a Google UK search on PO, and have dipped in and out ever since.
I've read Richard Heinberg's books The Party's Over and Powerdown.
When I first read into the PO subject, I had a bit of a doomerthon for a few weeks, and then got over it. Now, like many on this site, I'm looking for ways to counter the very serious threat to our way of life that PO poses.

Hello AutomaticEarth and welcome. What are you looking for specifically?AutomaticEarth wrote:Now, like many on this site, I'm looking for ways to counter the very serious threat to our way of life that PO poses.
PO doesn't present a serious threat in itself - it's merely a point in time. It's the inevitable energy decline and how it's managed (or not managed) that needs acknowledging and tackling.
Fossil fuel energy is going to be around for a long time yet, just (possibly but not necessarily) getting scarcer and dearer. What is really needed is a shift towards sensible use of fossil fuels rather than burning it as frivolously as we currently do.
Remaining fossil fuels should be used to move society to a system relying purely on solar energy.

Hi emordilnap, that's a great question I think I was looking for some pre-packaged solution for PO like 'when peak comes, go and do this' when there is no solution, just sensible steps that can be taken wrt food, financial affairs, housing, etc. After taking the time to read deeper into this site forum, a lot of questions have already been asked, so I'm currently researching the answers to these, to which there are many.Hello AutomaticEarth and welcome. What are you looking for specifically?
Totally on board with this. In fact, about 3 years ago, when I first heard of PO, I didn't take it at all seriously. I do now.....PO doesn't present a serious threat in itself - it's merely a point in time. It's the inevitable energy decline and how it's managed (or not managed) that needs acknowledging and tackling.
So I guess you do not want to rely on wind?Remaining fossil fuels should be used to move society to a system relying purely on solar energy.
Solar energy actually creates the wind.
Some areas are better for solar PV and some areas are better for wind. Cloud and a daily occurrence of nightime are barriers to PV. Lack of wind is obviously a problem for Wind Turbines, but also urban environments aren't great for WTs in general.

Wind (amongst other things) is solar energy.AutomaticEarth wrote:So I guess you do not want to rely on wind?Remaining fossil fuels should be used to move society to a system relying purely on solar energy.
