What changes can we make to our lives to deal with the economic and energy crises ahead? Have you already started making preparations? Got tips to share?

There's a bloke who lives near me who converted an old washing machine to a still. Obviously it won't get your clothes clean, but you could get so drunk that you don't notice/care.

We have a Bosch WFB2005 (2000 vintage: they don't make them any more). The repair chap (from Bosch) said it's a great machine and the newer versions have all got fancier electronics which shave a bit off the energy use but detract seriously from the reliability.

It was leaking a bit. New pump and it's fit for another 10 years!

Unless we move to a very warm climate, I don't do hand wash. For bedclothes and the like, a night hung out in the frost, or a day hung out in the hot sun/wind, will do in emergencies.

John, if you think it’s the module try EMW electronics, they will send you a reconditioned one for around £50 pounds. If it doesn’t fix the problem you can send it back and just pay a small fee.
Let nobody suppose that simple, inexpensive arrangements are faulty because primitive. If constructed correctly and in line with natural laws they are not only right, but preferable to fancy complicated devices.

Thanks. Isn't it amazing what you can find when it's too late! I did a Google search and didn't come up with that option.

Hopefully we'll be getting a reconditioned machine tomorrow, and I'm inclined to get that, and then decide what to do with the old one. The washing is piling up, and we can't really wait any longer.

In a quite unrelated topic, a fella who once fixed my washing machine was the feature conman on rogue traders the other week. He did a top notch job with mine.
