Population Reduction in Peak Oil Future

How will oil depletion affect the way we live? What will the economic impact be? How will agriculture change? Will we thrive or merely survive?

I think we are just using different terminology. By underclass I meant those not in mainstream employment. The people working in minimum wage jobs for big corporations I would call working class. The underclass (according to Murray who seems to have coined the phrase) are defined by benefit dependency, petty crime, substance abuse, unplanned pregnancies and intermittent untaxed working in the black economy.

Unfortunately the poor wretches working in taxed, low wage, low skill jobs are often lumped together with the underclass, but there are important differences.

Immigration is important here because it increases the pool of low-skill workers and prevents labour shortages from bidding up wage levels. Because illegal migrants are willing to work in the black economy at well below minimum wage levels and without on-costs like NI they tend to undermine legal, minimum wage employment and drive working class people into the underclass.

In fairness to migrants, the impact they have had on low-skill employment is small compared to the loss of jobs through relocation of manufacturing to low-wage economies. There's a sort of irony that so many economic migrants are coming to western europe looking for low-skill work just as most of that work is disappearing east!

I have no doubt that Labour are responding to the agenda set by big business. A large pool of cheap labour is obviously to their advantage to fill the few jobs they can't export.
It'll be life, but not as we know it.

This is sure one of the most PATHETIC articles I've read. I'm amazed how desperate can one get to save one's lifestyle. Hey, I want to stay warm and keep my job so if the government has to "reduce" population let's get started" What kind of life would that be? More militarised than Hitler's Germany, more evil and stupid than the China of Mao. Like the movie 1984. MY GOD! What does this guy thinks the govermnent is? Some kind of blessed institution that we have to follow blindly? What about the people? Can't we make our own decisions? Do we have to be babysitted for eternity?
No, we don't have to reduce population ourselfs, nature will take care of that by its own means.
If I die I want it to be because nature choses it, not because some dumb F--k burocrat decides it.
Truth, if it goes beyond any reasonable doubt.

Problem is Kevin, if we leave it to Nature, then we do put ourselves at serious risk of heading towards a Global Easter Island. Nature has a habit of providing time-delayed responses, which leads to overshoot and collapse (try "Limits to Growth - the 30 Year Update").

I was quite intrigued by the DarkAge site. I quite liked the "Proximate Causes of Decline" section in this page:
http://www.darkage.fsnet.co.uk/HistorySociety.htm
Although I initially disagreed with it, I can see how lack of energy does not in itself cause a decline, but the decadence that prevents Governments from implementing mitigatory mechanisms (e.g. your local windfarm protestor ;)) does. This reflects my fears on Peak Oil, not so much the phenomenon itself, but peoples' reaction (and resistance) to it. "I'm amazed how desperate can one get to save one's lifestyle" puts that in a nutshell.

Interesting stuff... I wonder if similar discussions are happening at the top.

It's so damn obvious none of you want to say it...wind-farm nimbies should be the first to go. Since they have larger resource use, on average, than the rest of us, and they are also generally older (and so lose fewer years of life), this is as near to Fair as it gets

On a more serious note, my prediction of gene specific biowarfare is the theme of tonights Spooks episode - Albany.

I am more than certain that this is the ultimate Plan B of the global powers-to-be... be warned, its real and it may be used in the future.

They should be rounded up, put in a field, and made to blow hard into small turbines whenever the wind drops :P

No wind turbines here! We didn't buy our luxury bungalows just to overlook a wind farm! Kill the eco scum!
