So even the US army is now considering fuel efficiency? This is good news. Armies around the world are profligate users of energy.

Aren't we human beings such pathetic little animals? I mean, we all knew that oil was a finite substance and yet we've created this wonderful economy around us designed to use it as quickly as possible. We're a frustrating lot. Just a thought.

US DOE: New CO2 Enhanced Recovery Technology Could Greatly Boost U.S. Oil

WASHINGTON , D.C. ? The Department of Energy (DOE) released today reports indicating that state-of-the-art enhanced oil recovery techniques could significantly increase recoverable oil resources of the United States in the future. According to the findings, 89 billion barrels or more could eventually be added to the current U.S. proven reserves of 21.4 billion barrels.

I guess that 30 years after peaking the USA is suddenly going to quadruple their reserves!



Seriously though, the report they cite might be worth looking at, as it will probably be trotted out by PO-deniers.

I think CO2 recovery is similar to non-conventional oil (heavy oil, tar sands etc) rather than conventional oil in that it is expensive and only produces low flow rates. Remember peak oil is nothing to do with how much oil there is in the world and everything to do with the rate of extraction. So maybe CO2 injection can increase the ultimately recovered oil from a field? The relevant question is what flow rate can it achieve and I suspect it's very low since without the CO2 injection the rate was zero, the oil in question couldn't be extracted at all.

There isnt anything in this report that would be new to the regular members of this forum.

It outlines the case for PO and the shortcomings of the so called "alternatives".

We agree on most of this.

What we argue about is the consequences, and quite frankly what we care about the most! ie is PO gonna screw us!? (and there is nothing in the report about that!)

Not really confirmation. The two who wrote the report have not done any original work. Its a review of the subject as it effects the army. If you look at the bibliography at the end you will find all the ususal suspects!
Cambell, Laherrere, Youngquist, Defeyes etc. (excuse spelling if any of those are wrong)

They're just recycling ASPO, including ASPO's criticisms of the EIA line on reserves. Whats interesting is that two govt. employees - both are Army Corps of Engineers - are not peddling the US govt line, but have been allowed to post something quite controversial on a military website. My impression has always been that the military ususally prefers to keep its debate and controversy 'in house' ie. out of view of the public, until a consensus is reached - which is then let out in the open for people to see.

Hirsch could get away with is as he's not govt. He was an outside contractor.

I'd love to see Guy Caruso's face when he sees this. Bad enough having Colin Campbell calling him a idiot at every opportunity- Now he's getting shafted from a direction he least expected...the army.

I don't disagree that there isn't much original work, but if the US army produce a report like that AND let it go public, it is as much confirmation as I need.

Now it is all about how bad it will get - which most of us knew was the main question anyway....
