Deliberate vandalism? I think if I were very poor and my corrupt government invited a foreign company to steal the wealth from under my land I'd be tempted towards deliberate vandalism too.

There can be no doubt that the way Shell operate in Nigeria is very different to the way they operate in Dorset.

You are right. Its a lot easier and cheaper to produce in Dorset. Shell tried selling its Nigeria interests once but there were no takers.

Most of the wealth of this country has been sold off to overseas companies. I don’t see revolts and vandalism to try and keep it in public ownership only deliberate acts of vandalism by misguided people on perfectly legitimate companies providing power and tax revenues to the UK under the mistaken belief that the small amount of coal they are using to provide this power will kill us all.

NIgeria is regularly reported to be the most corrupt country in the world. I have been to Gabon and seen the inequality in an African oil country. And that is a relatively benign one.

At the airport there were women dripping with gold jewelry and hairstyles I have never seen anywere else. At our jungle retreat we drank frozen water bottled in France. Yet we continously drove past proverbial mud huts with people proffering bushmeat to any takers.

That particular one (of all the entries) has the advantage that you could go round all their garages late at night with a stencil and some black paint...

The "final stage" to seal the leak was covered in quite some detail on the lunchtime news today. Apparently the tropical location has meant that the oil is being "metabolised" by microbes faster than it otherwise would be. The dispersant was a crap choice, mind. I still reckon they should have used Bio-D washing up liquid.

Indeed, now that the oil has gone, it is clear that it wasn't the disaster we thought it was at all, but a magnificent success story. It is more than safe now to step up deep water drilling.

I've lost a lot of respect for Obama over this fiasco. He seems opportunistic, ill-advised and ill-informed.
