Even if you vehemently disagree with Simmons's proposed solution and think he has gone somewhat off the rails on this one there are straws in the wind (and bubbles of methane in the water) which suggest he might not be totally wrong about what is happening.

I hope he is wrong and that there is a perfectly natural explanation to nearby oil seepages (from a reservoir 5000m under the seabed at extreme pressure) and the less than expected pressure recorded at the cap...

The Telegraph - 22/07/10

Tim Yeo, the Conservative MP chairing the Energy and Climate Change Committee, will lead MPs investigating North Sea offshore drilling, asking "serious questions" about the oil companies' plans for dealing with spills, including key safety devices such as blowout preventers.

It would be "more than a disappointment" if BP were to fail to put its executives up for questioning, Mr Yeo said.

The committee will also consider whether the UK should impose a ban on new drilling while the industry examines what happened on BP's Deepwater Horizon rig, which exploded on April 20 killing 11 men and triggering a giant leak.

I think it is unfair to discount Matt Simmons pronouncements.

It is hard to believe a man of his standing, knowledge and experience would be calling the massive open hole oil leak and BP cover-up that he is alleging without serious reason to do so.

He seems to be getting a lot of his recent information from the NOAA research ship, Thomas Jefferson.

I am very concerned about what he is alleging.

Nothing he's said over the last month makes sense - some stuff is simply wrong. Who knows why he's saying what he's saying, maybe he's just losing his marbles.

There have been "lakes" of high-pressure underwater Methane and even CO_2 before now, so oil is also a possibility. In theory at least.

That would be CO2 dissolved in water and methane does funny things with water too. Oil is immiscible and of lower density than water so how can it form a 'lake'?
