Esso was formed from the break up of Standard oil into severn smaller oil companies. They called it "S" "O" for Standard oil. As it was so close to the original name it was banned from using it in the states so was called Exxon. It then bought Mobil oil in the 90s and became ExxonMobildudley wrote:Esso? I suppose you mean ExxonMobil, soon to become ExxonMobilBP. Esso changed its name way back when in the 70's. It was thought Esso sounded too feminine and Exxon was more masculine.RenewableCandy wrote:Yes but anyone with a car and a conscience is already buycotting Esso (lobbying and slow response to Valdiz spill) and Shell (Ken S-W in Nigeria) so they're rapidly running out of firms to buy from.
BP bought Amoco and became BPAmoco. Later the chief exec said the way this is pronounced is "BP" as the Amoco part is pronounced silently

Russian-built submersibles would be able to cap the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico, the captain of one of the vessels has said.
The skipper was speaking as two of the subs - which can dive to 6,000m - started a campaign of exploration at the bottom of Lake Baikal in Siberia.
He added that there was still time for the subs to help BP with the disaster.
The subs are searching for gas hydrates - a potential alternative fuel source - on the bed of Baikal.

BP has successfully installed a new sealing cap on the leaking Gulf of Mexico oil well, company officials say.
It is hoped the new cap will stop the leak and capture all the oil before it can pour into the sea.
But BP warned the cap system had never been deployed at such depths and said "its efficiency and ability to contain the oil and gas cannot be assured".

I'm afraid this BP lark is going to form part of my ongoing case against nuclear power. There it was, a British, Blue Chip, can-(almost)-do-no-wrong company, doing its stuff to what we all thought was a high standard, when all of a sudden there's a large hole, and on closer inspection we find they haven't been taking precautions...
