Well, I just finished Alex Scarrow's "Afterlight" and as usual, after reading this sort of stuff, I started googling for relevant information and came up with this. Apologies if it has been posted before. It is from around 2003 so I'm sure some of you may have seen it?

Certainly it would make sense to use canals and railways for long-distance haulage as much as possible within a country.
