Keep up the good coverage on the Deepwater Horizon accident. An up-to-date overview can be found in the Encyclopedia of Earth:

If it cost $496,800 a day to operate the Deepwater Horizon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deepwater_horizon), and the well produces 5-6,000 barrels of oil a day at $75/barrel, it's not been very profitable has it?

The rig is there to drill a test well. If the results are OK then an FPSO will be stationed near by. The rig will then drill 20-30 production wells that will could produce around 150,000-250,000 bopd for anything up to 10-20 years. Production reduces dramatically after the first 5 years but at todays oil price the earnings will be in the 40-80 billion dollar mark.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/us_and ... 248409.stmSpeaking on the Andrew Marr Show, Mr Hayward said: "As we speak, the containment cap is producing around 10,000 barrels of oil a day to the surface."
Asked what amount of the estimate that represented, the BP chief executive said it was expected to be "the majority, probably the vast majority" of the oil gushing out.
So that's just fine and dandy. They're collecting 10000b/d, probably the vast majority.
So WTF is this LIVE video feed showing?

http://www.theonion.com/articles/massiv ... -bp,17564/LONDON—As the crisis in the Gulf of Mexico entered its eighth week Wednesday, fears continued to grow that the massive flow of bullshit still gushing from the headquarters of oil giant BP could prove catastrophic if nothing is done to contain it.
Rees-Mogg takes the opportunity to explain things to DM readers:
