Just saw a clear live shot : it seems the saw is still running and oil is also emerging at the same site.

I suppose this means that they are partially through.

A sound track commentary would be nice!

Hmmm ... seems that they have now decided to cut away some attachment pipes with a disk saw prior to setting the big bitey gadget onto the underlying main pipe.

I've just had my first look at the live feed. It's starting to resemble a scene from 'Lost In Space'. :)

Like something from Abysss, Sphere etc ... amazing stuff!

I'm in my office wired to a world wide web watching live video from the floor of the Gulf Of Mexcico, sent back from remote controlled robot vehicles on the sea bed.

You couldn't make it up.

UK forms oil spill focus group

Oil & Gas UK is forming an advisory group to coordinate work on oil spill prevention and response practice in UK waters, ahead of the conclusion of investigations into the deepwater spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Mark McAllister, chief executive of Fairfield Energy, will chair The Oil Spill Prevention and Response Advisory Group (OSPRAG).

“The regulatory regime in the UK continental shelf requires companies to put in place robust checks to minimize the risk of oil spills,” he said.

“We have not had a blow-out in the last 20 years of operations and the oil spills we do have tend to be on a very small scale. However, we must always ensure we put the safety of our employees first and minimize any adverse environmental impacts of our operations, so in light of the recent Gulf of Mexico incident, it is only right that we take a fresh look at our practices in the UK for oil spill prevention and response.

Last time I looked the 'CUT' thingy was attached to the pipe on top of the BOP. What happened? The live webcam is just showing the oil plume from a pipe on the sea bed, I think.

Joe Romm wrote:You just can’t make this stuff up. In the dumbest PR move since Tiger Woods (temporarily) hired “Ari Fleischer, the much-maligned former Bush Administration press secretary,” to try to reconstruct his image, “BP has hired a former top aide for Vice President Dick Cheney to be their new spokeswoman,” Think Progress reports.

The reckless oil giant is in big trouble, and deservedly so. The Financial Times reports, “BP’s shares suffered their worst one-day fall for 18 years on Tuesday,” a 13% drop — to a total drop since the disaster of 31%, a loss of nearly $70 billion in market share. At the same time, “Market measures of the risk that BP will default on its debts also rose sharply.”

22.19pm - BP are currently using what looks like a circular saw to cut through a series of pipes.

That was exciting. I saw them go through one of the pipes and break it away. It reminded me that I need to find out why my angle grinder was playing up the other day!
