Why isn't the granting of deepwater drilling licences conditional on proving that you have tested effective techniques for dealing with a blow out/pipe rupture/ leak etc.
Maybe something to do with regulation? And who controls oil legislation in the White House?

Actually, yes, it is.
Thats a relief. I thought it was against the law for me to do it. I love the modern society where you can always blame somebody else for your own incompetence.

care2 make a difference - 31/05/10

Make no mistake:BP stinks. Their Gulf accident and safety violation record, their lack of transparency, their short-term profit focus are all sickening. But ultimately, BP is only truly responsible for this spill if you believe that drilling for oil in a mile of water can ever be done safely. BP is part of a system that has made us all dependent on oil and petroleum-based products, and with our consumption spurring demand, we must all shoulder some of the blame for the calamity in the Gulf of Mexico and beyond.

ziggy,
Have you ever wondered why 'the locals' would want to do that ?

Maybe, if you saw faceless multinationals stealing your natural resources, destroying your way of life and returning nothing except environmental degredation, then you might get pretty pissed off too. At least if you cut a pipe and nick a bit then you get some benefit, even if it does increase pollution levels......

Meanwhile, the view from the deep - I guess this is the world's lowest live webcam:

Possibly it shows a pipe being cut through with a diamond wire saw. There again...

Once the saw breaks through I'll doubt we''l see anything in the blast of oil & gas that will appear.

I hope the ROV operators have a way of 'seeing' through that stuff.

There's a robot arm with a disc cutter on the end hacking into a spewing pipe as I type - this is fascinating !

The saw is still attached (I know it's a saw 'cos it has a label saying 'CUT').

The exciting moment will be when it gets through and the oil starts coming out much faster.

I'm finding it difficult to get a stable live video feed ... BUT ... I'm sure I got a glimpse of the BOP venting oil, so it seems the pipe has been cut.

Has anyone got any clean news on this?
