Where is the info saying it was a bad cement job? I can only see a suggustion it might be. Even if the cement failed the last line of defence is the BOP.

Why concrete, steel would be easier to fabricate and take less time. Would this work and if so why aren't they talking about doing it?

Yeah, I think it is mostly steel. Then they have to drill a new hole into the top of the oil-bearing horizon (this was a 30000ft hole!), flood it first with sea water and then, if that get into the original hole it is followed with heavy mineral mud to hold the oil down and then concrete. It's never been done before at this depth.

Seems we can all blame Cheney (again) - he allowed drilling without the acoustic valves that the Norwegians insist on.

Of course I can understand Arnies concerns, and the changing of his mind, but is it a little hypocritical given then vast amount of oil Californians consume?

Will Arnie refuse to allow the use of offshore oil and related products in his state? (I doubt it!!!!)

Hey! Who started this thread?
LOL

You said it was 'tragic' and 'didn't sound so good' (alright, you used the word 'disaster'). I wanted the real doomer credit.

Just upped the limit on my 'Doomer' card so I can have a bit of spraoi (the Irish word for 'fun', pronounced 'spree' funnily enough) because I'm worth it.

Just waiting for a mail on the exact problems on the rig. There were 7 executives from BP on the rig at the time attending a party to celebrate 7 years without a lost time accident.

From what I have been told over the phone gas at surface was sucked into the engine intakes and they exploded. This should not happen as the air intakes into the engines should have been protected by high gas shutdowns. more as I get it

Cheers

BBC News - 04/05/10

Welders in Louisiana are working against the clock to build a giant iron funnel for BP in a bid to halt the huge spill from a Gulf of Mexico well.

Is the rig seven years old? Or are you talking about the whole of BP?
