Yep, it may mean UKIP/BNP pick up a seat or two that they wouldn't otherwise have done and it could tip a few more vulnerable labour seats into the hands of the libdems or tories. It showed a disconnect between Gordon Brown and normal labour voters. People are worried about immigration, I believe they are right to be worried, and the current rise of the BNP is purely being driven by the unwillingness of mainstream politicians to talk about it.Vortex wrote:Brown regarding ANY discussion of immigration as 'bigoted' is the obvious problem.
Many potential Labour voters may now vote for someone else.

Why? Aren't there enough menial, low-paid jobs to go round or something? Have the Brits decided they should be doing those jobs instead?UndercoverElephant wrote:People are worried about immigration,

FFS, what's the fuss about.
You're all starting to sound like members of the gutter press banging on about this belligerent old biddy whose opinions aren't worth airing anyway.
Who cares what GB called her. Time to move on.

What? Gordon's not worried about an immigrant taking his job? Fair dos though, Clegg is 2nd generation.Andy Hunt wrote:Unlike Gordon of course, for whom all those things are top priority.biffvernon wrote:Why didn't Mrs Duffy ask him about Peak Oil, global warming and the electricity generation gap?
Oh, yeah, like almost everyone else she was more worried about immigrants.
Having had the chance to sleep on the meeting with that Labour voter and the talk in the car immediately afterwards, I can only conclude that Brown is not just out of touch with the electorate, but more, a very nasty character.
I'm hippest, no really.

Well, they would if it was worth their while coming off of benefits, but the minimum wage is so low that in many cases they are better off on the dole.emordnilap wrote:Why? Why are people worried about immigration? Perhaps it is because England is the most heavily-populated country in Europe and nobody except the BNP is willing to talk seriously about it.
Why is this woman being called a bigot (by ANYBODY) for mentioning the word "immigration"? What did she actually say which was "bigoted"? Am I a bigot?

actually all 3 main parties are now proposing some pretty serious immigration controls. UKIP and BNP go further of course, each in their own way. The 3 main parties are not proposing to leave the EU, so under current free movement rules can't stop EU immigration, but the EU migrants come and go with the available work anyway.UndercoverElephant wrote: Why are people worried about immigration? in my view, immigration is far down the list of things to worry about.
