'Course in 1890 they had all that new fangled computer driven "just in time" delivery services and their food came from all over the world to a central distribution depot before being trucks out to the shops. There were so many people that there was only just enough land to feed every one. Coal and minerals weren't near the surface any more they were 5000 ft deep in open caste mines. People had jobs which were so far away from food production that when the shops ran out they couldn't grow their own, even if they had a bit of land, etc.!!! And all the people "inhabitating" that world died!

Get back down on the girlfriend, MacG or stick your head in the sand again. It seems to have the same effect on you.
You think you going to live forever? Of course it will be a real bummer to transfer to the consumption level of Nepal, but who will be better off? Me who anticipate it or you who gnaw your teeth over it? Whatever we do will not affect the physical outcome.

I've been anticipating and preparing for it for a long time, Mac.

I'm trying to rebuild a mirror disk on the boot partition of our main database server, and I know our backups are junk.

The server is 10 years old, and even the replacement disk is 6. Hardware and software too old to replace. Nothing is supported. I am the sole survivor of the IT dept, and I am a programmer without any systems training.

I need distracting!

Ironically, the TOD website has just gone down with database problems.
user warning: Table './drupal/cache_filter' is marked as crashed and should be repaired query: cache_get /* Anonymous : cache_get */ SELECT data, created, headers, expire, serialized FROM cache_filter WHERE cid = '4:c4c24086efa0f8fb777c70f71abfafd3' in /web_local/theoildrum.com/www/includes/cache.inc on line 26.

Look! You are cheating and starting a post-PeakOil lifestyle already! Expect more of the same, and be VERY happy that you still belong to the middle class - it is really crap to be tossed out among the poor.

The other thing is the fear factor - I noted that in the summary of the report they said:
We argue that one of the principle initial drivers of the collapse process will be growing visible action about peak oil. It is expected that investors will attempt to extract themselves from "virtual assets"; such as bond, equities, and cash and convert them into "real" assets before the system collapses. But the nominal value of virtual assets vastly exceeds the real assets likely to be available. Confirmation of the peak oil idea (by official action), fear, and market decline will drive a positive feedback in financial markets.
Don't you think that the same process would drive investment in mitigation measures?
Not in time for most people. By that point the only measures worth taking will be for trying to preserve some remnants of our civilisation I expect. Remember the Hirsch report? 20 year crash-course needed before the peak...
