NHS: "Low Carbon is good for your health"

Post by RenewableCandy »

From Beeb News:
So doctors are increasingly determined to do something to prevent global warming, particularly as the health benefits of low carbon living are huge.

Reduced dependence on motor traffic will mean less pollution and reduced road accidents; more walking will lead to less obesity and reduced heart attacks; and less meat eating (since growing animals to eat is a huge contributor to global warming) will mean lower cholesterol and perhaps fewer cancers.

Good news. Exactly the sort of message “ the peeps” can get behind. Simple message, soon, certain and positive benefits.

Much better than the message

” We're all doomed and there is nothing you can do about it. Why is no one taking any notice that we are telling them they are going to die, we are climate scientists”

Reminds me of the story of the office worker who said he had to drive to work rather than cycle, because if he cycled he wouldn't have time to get to the gym at lunchtime to keep fit.

Sort of reminds me of certain members of my office....

I suggested to someone not a million miles from me that they should run to the gym and back and not go in rather than driving there, buying the cheap membership available at the time and using the running machines. It didn't go down very well.

I've suggested this to people. Run to the gym, laugh at the people inside, run back. They think I'm joking!

And the example of cycling is hugely important. Apart from the personal benefits, there is the potential of huge monetary savings to the health service, the emergency services, maintenance services etc etc.

And hey! You get to drive on less congested roads, too...

Yes, cycling is important but not always safe to do so!

We live not far from the Eden Project and would love to cycle around here very much more than we do but the roads are very narrow and winding and car drivers with SatNav frequent them all too often and at ridiculous speeds.

Yup. Cycling - possibly the ultimate most efficient form of locomotion - is bedevilled by an upside-down approach, favouring one of the least efficient.

Yes, it is so true. It is amazing what social conditioning can do to our heads......

I refuse point blank to join a gym as many colleagues have suggested. I prefer to walk lots, eat lots, drink lots and be over weight but have a healthy heart that gets regular workouts! I hope this is the right philosophy, or else I am fecked!

It is a bit like the cartoon which showed two elderly frail people sitting in those large winged chairs you see in nursing homes. One saying to the other,

“ If we had not given up the fags and booze we’d have missed all this!
