Ahmadinejad orders suspension of NPT Additional Protocol
A new level of escalation?
PERSONALLY Speaking, I'm expecting Outrage from "our" side first of all.
Then a "discussion" within the popular press regarding how long it will take Iran to enrich enough uranium in order to build what in actual fact would be a comparitively small nuclear weapon combined with stories about Mad Mullah's.
Followed by an attempted UN security council resolution ordering Iran to cease enrichment- I believe that the council is meeting on 04/03/2006 AD to discuss this issue.
However I don't know if the council will pass this resolution.
A complete list of UN security council members presently sitting can be found here
http://www.un.org/Docs/sc/unsc_members.html
As far as I can tell there is only one Muslim member at the moment- Qatar
No wait a minute; isn't Denmark a really strict Muslim country.....
Moving on, the letter by the President Of Iran to the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization, may be read here----

Iran ends voluntary cooperation with the IAEA
(AP)
5 February 2006
TEHERAN - Iran has ended all voluntary cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki announced on Sunday.
The president had ordered the move a day before in response to the IAEA referring Iran to the UN Security Council over its nuclear program.
?We ended all the voluntary cooperation we have been extending to the IAEA in the past two and a half to three years, on the basis of the president?s order,? Mottaki said. ?We do not have any obligation toward the additional protocol (anymore).?
The announcement means Iran has resumed uranium enrichment and will no longer allow snap IAEA inspections of its nuclear facilities, both voluntary measures it had allowed in recent years in a goodwill gesture to build trust.
Iran has repeatedly stressed that it would continue to honor its commitments under the NPT but that it has the right to pursue a peaceful nuclear program.

Hmmm, not sure I like that.

Of course, it has to be approved. Let's hope not.

Pentagon to research potential nuclear fallout: report

The objective of the program is to quickly determine who exploded the device, in part to clarify options to strike back, the Times reported.
If you believe this folks, start your gardens. Get some hens and rabbits. Stock seeds and tools and food and kerosene and razorblades. Dont forget soap and shampoo. Learn about composting toilets. If this comes true, we are freakin doomed.hatchelt wrote:sorry if this is slightly off-topic, but i did a big ole rant in my journal about the coming attack on iran and got this as a reply (he's american btw):
some paranoid freaks here say that we'd better god damned well attack Iran "before they attack us," but here's the irony:
-we attacked Iraq based on a complete f***ing lie, when they did nothing to us first.
-if we don't attack Iran in a similar fashion without warning, they might very well get pissed off enough to do something incredibly stupid somewhere down the line and start WWIII.
i think the fat is already in the fire.
No problem says Guy Caruso head of the E.I.A
What happens if Irans oil gets taken off the market?
'No problemo' says Guy Caruso head of the EIA - the Energy Information Agency - the guys who sit in the corner and compile the stats at the US Dept. of Energy.

Peak Oil? sometime beyond 2030 says Guy. Reserves revisions rool OK. Adequate and timely investment is all that is needed
I'm not holding it against him, but he sounds half dead in this interview... Maybe a bad hair day, but he doesnt sound like he's up to speed on energy deals going down between Iran and other countries... Hmm... worrying.
William R Clark however, anticipates $100+ per barrel in the event of an interuption to Iranian oil exports

...a good general discussion of the politics of the Iran situation, which then moves on to Peak Oil theory.

George Kenney just make a hell of a lot of sense. Discovered the site today and are listening religiously to the interviews. Quite some lineup and they also make a hell of a lot of sense. The way the guests tell the stories correlate strongly to my view of how the world is beeing run. An ant heap. Have not come to Guy Caruso yet though, sounded like the least interesting this far.skeptik wrote:What happens if Irans oil gets taken off the market?

Suspected drawings of nuclear test site found in Iran: diplomats

US officials are confident the data is genuine, diplomats said, even though some analysts have criticized it as unreliable since it is believed to come from only one source.
The data concerns a program called Project 111 under which the Iranians have also studied how to design a ballistic missile to handle a load that is not named as a possible nuclear warhead. The word "nuclear" is not mentioned in any of the Project 111 documents.
But the "package" could only be for this purpose due to the height at which the missile is set to explode on re-entry, diplomats said.

BLAIR: 'BRITISH TROOPS IN IRAN? WE CAN NEVER SAY NEVER'

And asked if the British military option was on the table, he admitted: "You can never say never in any of these situations."
The warning is a significant increase in the language the PM has used against the Tehran-based regime which is also accused of developing nuclear weapons. American military experts have already said war-planes are on standby to attack.
Efter listening to George Kenney and his guests, I feel inclined to reverse my position a bit. An attack on Iran actually seem possible. And if it happen, it's just must be a cleverly constructed trap for the neocons and the entire US.
It's pretty impossible to imagine that the oil will sail as ususal trough Hormuz in case of an attack on Iran, and it's impossible to imagine that the guys in Bejing will just sit there and take it as some 15% of their oil imports from Iran disappear together with the stuff they buy on NYMEX. They would kill the dollar in a day or two.
If this is a trap, the entire world will shake when it springs, but the US as we know it will be completely destroyed. It's just a matter of a month or two before they lose everything.
On the bright side, a fast hit would give a little more hope for a positive outcome than a 10-15 year decline, this since people would actually realise that something monumental has happened. A slow decline would turn the US into something like 18'th century India with a small gang of Maharadjas owning the majority of the population.
Hmmm... Better stock up on some more sewing needles, thread, shoes and warm clothes. I'm almost complete, but why not stock some stuff for barter also? I expect the acute phase to shake us for 1-6 months, but after that the basic stuff will reappear. It would be nice of the neocons to do it in March. The worst part would hit us over the summer.
And Mr V. Putin will just stand there and look so compleeetely surprised and innocent!

Thing is tho, all the US would need to do would be to seize a 90mile strip along the iraq border, which is where Iran's oil lies. They could then effectively cut off Iran's oil suppl to the Iranian population and military, crippling the country. Maybe China won't mind - maybe they need the US to stay afloat, in case China's manufacturing goes into meltdown, thereby crippling their own economy. Maybe they would be happy for the US to control part of Iran, so long as they are guaranteed a slice of the oil pie.
