When my Mum went into a residential home, it had almost the atmosphere that half a dozen elderly people had pooled their resources, bought a big house between them, and used their remaining capital and incomes to pay for people to look after them. It was actually a small commercial operation, but gave me the idea that this was a good way to go. It's one of many inspirations that led to the idea of creating Eco-Hamlets.

In 1972 he bought a new car for £1,000, so that would make it worth maybe £100-200k at today's prices, so not a bad sum to live on. The inflation in the 70s wiped out most of the value. .
A car at £100-200k at today's prices?

Something doesn't make sense here.

He had £10k savings, and bought a car for £1k. It was only a bottom of the range Vauxhall Viva, so assuming something similar cost £10k after a good dose of inflation, that would have made his £10k savings the equivalent of £100k!
