Great job... this was covered on the news tonight. But, it looks like a bunch of drop out hippies causing hassle. I know, I know. But really media wise this is not helping 'the cause'. I had friends around when it came on the TV and though peak aware they sat on the fence with this 'action'.
They need to stop it with the purple hair and digeridoo's and get real.

From now on, don't count on the mainstream media reporting peaceful protest fairly - remember, these people are terrorists.

It's very easy to be critical, maudibe, but try to come up with an alternative that works. Some of us have been trying all sorts of things for thirty years and everything we've tried, such as not having purple hair or playing digeridoos has failed. The world is in a mess. What shall we do?
The people in the Climate Swoop must surely be seen as part of the solution.

THE CAUSE!?
What is the cause Maudibe? And what's geting real? Sitting on your hands for the last thirty odd years and fukk all to show for it. The paint and disguise is there in most cases to give us anonimity to allow us to do this again.
You weren't there, I was. So shut up.

Just another monkey with technology
On one of the first protests I went on I was apparently part of a "pink haired mob". The fact that only one person out of the hundred odd there had pink hair was irrelevant. Journos just can't avoid using stereotypes and this is picked up on by the general public. crusties, workshy and soap dodgers are a few of the descriptions in the comments section of the press to describe protestors.
Regardless of the media angle this action has shown that a lot of ordinary people are getting very angry by the lack of any serious change to tackle climate change.

Rob, I'm sorry I got under your skin - or at least caused you to shout and swear.
If you read my post again I'm sure you'll realise that I am not being critical of the actions or motives of the protesters. I indeed gave a nod by saying 'Great job" & 'I know, I know'.
I was merely noting how the media portrayed it and subsequently how some of my PO aware friends responded.
'The cause', as I see it, is to raise awareness and to take positive action to reduce environmental impact caused by burning of coal and other such nasties. Am I mistaken? Perhaps... see my final paragraph.
I wasn't there - you are correct. But I don't need to be told to shut up.
Really Rob, telling me to shut up rings alarm bells. I was making a statement of opinion only; surely something that should be encouraged in a democracy. I am prepared to listen to the views of all members of this forum. Surely my input is valued by some.
Now, regarding the use of paint and disguise....since you have put it this way I see the sense of it. However... IMHO I think in order to win people, government and corporate types over there needs to be a heavy middle ground presence that the media can latch onto. This should have been mentioned in my origional post - or perhaps I should have replied to Biffvernon's post.
Perhaps there is a good solid core representative of middle england - but the key point is that the journos don't portray it or choose to ignore them and rather focus on the obvious 'action'. I feel as though I could be digging a deeper hole here, but I am having difficulty... as now I feel I am walking on glass.
My comment 'getting real' was perhaps flippant. What I meant is stated above. I am sure the protesters are as real as they can get. Apologies.
John B - I appreciate freedom fights and the connection with liberty - and I am indeed grateful. Pleased that you saw my point about the reportage of such.
The thing is, as Neckiep mentioned, journalists just can't avoid stereotyping it all.
I not personally convinced that the media has influenced the general public in the desired way. Most just want the lights to stay on regardless of cost to the environment. If you work in an office with Mr and Mrs average (age 40+) you certainly get that feeling. Would I be wrong in thinking that is at odds with your viewpoint Rob? I bet it is.
So there's the cause... to convice Mr and Mrs average of your viewpoint, and therefore get the electorate to demand action of their democratically elected representatives. Fair dinkum.

Ah yes, that's always a good optionmaudibe wrote:perhaps I should have replied to Biffvernon's post.
So, like I said
For my part, I spent a fair bit of Saturday following the Swoop tweets and spreading the news through cyberspace. At other times I put a lot of time into stuff related to Transition Town Louth working in a very green business and growing food. If, like a lot of folk who still, however, comprise a tiny minority of the population, you have come to the conclusion that continuing to burn coal risks the extinction of the human race, what should you do?try to come up with an alternative that works.
What to do... well I guess I am following my own advice and talking to people about these issues. I've managed to explain PO to about half a dozen with solid results. I have less sucess with global warming issues and renewability.
It does seem though as if these few people are very interested / convinced about sustainability. So its a start.
I work in education and often make the chance to bring some of these issues up. Funny how young adults are quite clued to environmental issues but blissfully unaware of oil and other energy issues.
So perhaps it balances out... oldies understand oil and young uns seem spot on with climate change etc.
So yea...what do I do...I'm a voice piece and persuader to an awful lot of people. Works for me.
