It's a rather tired arguement. We should be the ones good at wholistic thinking. If someone burns a lot of carbon getting to a meeting but his actions persuade a great many other people to burn less carbon then his actions provide a net benefit.

If Gordon swims to Copenhagen but is followed by a power boat carrying his papers he has achieved about as much as Dave on his bike.

(It's an entertaining immage, nevertheless.)

In this case, yes. It's an oft and ill-used excuse though, like your one flying to New York for her film première, what was it, 10-10 for a copy or something.

Oh come off it. Franny Armstrong has done more to help solve the problem in the last year than just about anyone on the planet. Age of Stupid world premiere yesterday in 63 countries (would have been 64 but Nigeria banned it 'cos they didn't like the stuff about the oil industry in their country!). Ed Milliband at the premiere - again! She's done a lot to influence him. Here's his piece in the Grauniad today:
