Waste that detracts from the potential good life of 7bn people.
I saw The End of The Line today, one point they made was the madness of farmed predator fish. Farmed salmon are fed anchovies, it take 5 kg of anchovy for every kg of salmon.

I was there. It was bloody obvious I was a forriner because I was the only woman with (non-painted) colour in her face, and a smile.

However it also happened to be the most grim time of year (late March) and so you have to check that St Petersburg isn't like that every spring (I don't know becasue I promised myself I'd stick to other times of year in future!).

And, frankly, the Russians "do" dispair with so much more style than us Brits.

What I'm trying to say is the journalist should have compared it with some other epoch as a control.

I think I'm inclined to trust the journalist's judgment. I know Russia was grim in the Communist era, but many Russians in the 1990s were complaining that things were better under Communism. Common sense says to me that there is a link between despair and economic gloom.

He was a journalist, not a research biologist! A good journalist relies a lot on his gut feelings.

My guess is that if you go to Russia now, you will find it, on the whole, a happier place than it's ever been in its, admittedly mostly miserable, history.

you can do your own research into what our govt are up to, and remember they have come out to be liars to get us involved in wars, and they admit they have secret prisons where they rape children as a form of interrogation, if you think govt is your friend your daft .

Hah. NOW tell us there's nothing fishy going on.

For those who didn't follow the link:
A warning that the new swine flu jab is linked to a deadly nerve disease has been sent by the Government to senior neurologists in a confidential letter.

The letter from the Health Protection Agency, the official body that oversees public health, has been leaked to The Mail on Sunday, leading to demands to know why the information has not been given to the public before the vaccination of millions of people, including children, begins.

It tells the neurologists that they must be alert for an increase in a brain disorder called Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), which could be triggered by the vaccine.
(My emphasis.)

What a facile response. Your implication is that the Mail is making it up, in which case it will be sued, so let's see, eh?

Hey ludwig, I don't think that was Chris's implication. I think he was having a light hearted leg-pull.

But I agree that I will be in no rush to take any vaccine!

No, the implication is that the Daily Mail prints sensationalist trash that any thinking person doesn't take seriously.

The news here is that the Health Protection Agency has asked doctors to check for increases in GBS when the national vaccination programme begins. This is absolutely the right thing to do. Flu vaccines do carry this risk, it is only sensible to watch for it with a new vaccine. In the US with the 70's outbreak, 40m were vaccinated with 25 deaths from GBS - less than one in a million!

The normal seasonal flu vaccine also carries a risk of GBS but we don't hear the newspapers shouting about do we?

This story is nothing more than irresponsible, sensationalist journalism playing on people's interest in swine flu and irrational fear of government and vaccines. Just what the Daily Mail love.

Absolutely. It's cognitive dissonance: any information that doesn't fit people's world view is just filtered out or dismissed. Those who present this information are shot down by straw man arguments ("You're just like those people who..." etc.; "The Daily Mail uses inflammatory language against immigrants, so nothing it says is true"... just lazy, complacent thinking).

Having got used to being able to determine their own lives, people in the West have become arrogant and complacent: "My leaders are too stupid/incompetent to do me any harm."

That accounts for most of the Mail's output. They do occasionally print quite good articles eg http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/ ... thods.html. Any problems with that article? A lot of the comments after that are quite bonkers though. As is to be expected.

Thanks for pointing out the low odds of getting GBS. Makes me feel a lot better about that vaccine :)

EDIT: Er, on the other hand...

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/u ... 799297.ece

"One in three nurses say they will not be immunised against swine flu, despite being offered the vaccine as a priority to protect patients.

Concerns about the vaccine’s safety and a perception that the infection is mild are among reasons that NHS staff gave for refusing to have the jab, a survey of nearly 1,500 staff found."
