Hi Joe, thank you.

I won't be able to make Leeds I'm afraid, it's quite a long way for me to travel. Although the End of Suburbia is pretty good. Hopefully it will rally more people to the cause! :)

OK, not to worry. Incidentally, who's your MP - Hague?

Yep, he's the one. I could do with writing him a letter, although I can guess the response

Well, you don't know until you try :)

I found that using http://www.writetothem.com/ took all the hassle out of it.

I'm in Yorkshire

I'm very Pessimistic. I've got to the point were I'm thinking of just enjoying whats left. No one or at least not enough people to make a difference want to listen or want to care. So why waste the last few good years of life left???

I'm Pessimistic because how can you honestly believe we can continue as a Society on the slide??? Its impossible, we've had too much!!! If our Governments admitted too it now then yeah people may understand, unfortunately those suckers believe Captain Hydrogen will save our butts!!!

In all honesty, or if you all looked in your hearts, you'd see nothing but Chaos! Starving people, Warring Nations, Rich not understanding why there money is meaningless now, etc. Some of those things may be happening now in certain ares of the World but soon they'll be on a Global Scale!

Now ask yourself honestly am I being Pessimistic??? or just realistic???

Nuclear War could just screw it all up completely and its probably closer now than ever before!
Enjoy yourself with the time remaining, I've decided I'm going to.

You know Wayne, if everyone who's discovered Peak Oil just gives up and waits for society to go down the pan then it almost certainly will.

However, if we get off our arses and try to raise awareness, start writing to local newspapers, local councillors, MPs, start holding End of Suburbia showings, start trying to organise on a local level and working together with each other and existing local groups then maybe, just maybe we'll have a chance at making a positive difference to the outcome.

Yes, it's very discouraging, the letters you write get ignored, family and friends think you're losing it, strangers think you're a loony, but as people start to get a consistent message that "there's a problem with oil" coming from several different places, they might eventually begin to take notice, and they might begin to want to start helping themselves. Over time the majority of people might realise that the best way to help yourself is to work with others and we all might start helping each other.

Nobody knows exactly what's going to happen in the future, but I know one thing for sure: in a few years from now if my children ask me why they're always hungry or why we can't afford to buy the medicine they need, the answer I give them isn't going to be "because daddy didn't try".

Joe I know your right, i'm just going through one of those giving up phases because of the negativity i'm recieving again. Just after I thought I was making a breakthrough with some people, they've just since forgot about it and avoid talking about it and are carrying on as normal.

Enough people to make a difference aren't going to give to$$ about it until its too late! Its a easy pill to understand but one thats dificult to swallow. My emails and letters have hit brick walls. Of the influential people behind PO i've emailed only James Kunstler replies, none of my local MP's have even bothered. One of the MP's has told my Dad he his looking forward to me attending the Labour Party meetings, so I suppose thats a bonus. But I sometimes feel i'm more a "conspiracy theorist" or a thicko on PO because I get shot down because of my Pessimism. Thats hard to take and off putting. I do read loads of books on the subject but I do skip read when it comes to websites. All because I see only the worst of scenarios does it make my oppinons silly? And because I don't have a photographic memory, does my lack of remembering every detail and chart/graph mean I don't fully get PO?

My theory is the Government can't possibly own up to PO because there is too many problems with it. The Stock, Population, Technology, Food plus much more.... Its going to shut society down as we know it, regardless of how a lot of people on here want to disagree. There's going to be riots, panic and pure chaos! Nearly everyone who lived before the Oil age are Dead or real old now; everyone else takes it for granted, excepted us lot. The Government know this and they don't know what to do.

You'll be surprised (or maybe not) how many people pin their hopes and future on Captain Hydrogen. But they have no answer when I say well how do you maintain the Asphalt Roads with Hydrogen?

I will continue for now but I will also get on with whats left of The Party. I've prepared my psyche for what will happen and when it does happen I will walk with a smile for a while, whilst everybody else around me will be falling apart, wondering what went wrong with the "Dream of junior being the next Beckham!"
Enjoy yourself with the time remaining, I've decided I'm going to.

Expect the worst
Hope for the best
It will probably all turn to shit
But the only thing you can do is try. At least you tried.

Hi everyone,

I'm from Halifax.

I came across peak oil six months ago & since then I've made it my business to get 'oiled up!'

It'd be great to speak to other individuals and groups in Yorkshire - at least you won't think I'm bonkers like everyone else I've spoken to (well, hopefully not!).

I'm not in the 'write to your MP' protest camp though. I believe our government are fully aware of what's going on (how can they not be!)and have decided the best way to get future supplies is to be nice to Geroge Bush so once he invades Southern Iran and gains control of the straits of hormuz he might let us have some of his.

I've got over my sense of injustice with it all and I'm in the 'we're on our own' camp. I am doing what I can to prepare (difficult on a densely populated housing estate!). Anyway, I dont work in a sector dependent on discretionary spending, which should keep my job safe intially - the down side is i've a 50 mile round trip every day! - I've got used to the idea that Mon-Fri I'll be taking a sleeping bag to work.

I've got a year's supply of food hidden away in case things go seriously pear shaped and I've cleared virtually all of my debt at the expense of my retirement nest egg (By the time I retire there'll be no oil left anyway!).

I'd be particularly interested in someone who's looking to set up a sustainable community - that's my weakness at the moment, there's no room to grow veg on our housing estate and anyway the hungry hordes would just come and dig it up!

Petrol price at time of post 93p litre!

Cheers

Steve

Hi Steve, welcome to powerswitch. Good to have more northerners on here. I'm originally from Wakefield but have been stuck dahn sarf for a decade earning a crust.

You'll no doubt find more than a few people here who share your experiences and are planning in similar ways. Similarly to yourself I've also redirected my pension funds into getting debt-free by paying off the mortgage in the short term.

Regarding the sustainable community thing, you might like this thread : http://www.powerswitch.org.uk/forum/vie ... highlight=

There are several threads others of similar ilk. Have a search through the archives.

Hi Steve,

I'm holding a screening of 'End of Suburbia' & 'The power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil' in Leeds on 24th May. See here for more details. It'd be good to see you there!
