Good point Jon. Providing reassurance will probably be the first thing for elderly relatives/neighbours.

I must admit that I find it hard to do that much in response to this. Although, I have ordered some of those masks referred to above. If they are not needed, I'll be able to use them with some DIY work, if nothing else.

On the plus side, shares in airlines are down 10%ish. Oil is down
$2-3 so far. This is the sort of event that triggers a recession in normal times. If half the industrial world takes a week off, we could see all sorts of unexpected consequences.

However, I think the mood in the UK is more 'buckle down and get on with it'. We are gloomed out with the bad news at the moment - even the Tories are electioneering on austerity. They really must believe they are a shoe in at the next election.

I hope this brings out the good neighbour in people rather than the run for the hills response

On the good neighbour side, our neighbours are having an extension built. My wife has been force-feeding the builders tea. Last week a delivery lorry (to us) smashed a man-hole cover (imperial size, hard to find). I was given a cover and frame, but just too big. The builders removed the old frame, cut out the space, and cemented in the replacement this morning, in thanks for the tea.

I was listening to one of the US channels at lunchtime and on the bright side we are at the tail end of flu season so shouldn’t be as bad as if was during the winter, otherwise this could have been going on for a while in Mexico but was not picked up in statistics. Made speculations that the victims in Mexico may have had other medical issues

I had a premature panic when SARS was in the news and I'm damned if I'm going to do it again without good reason. Not saying this isn't serious, just that there are so many things to panic about now, that I feel it's best just to get on with living a life that may well prove shorter than one expected ten years ago :\

Some of the conspiracy nutters think it was the bankers wot did this.

The reasoning goes like this:

Bankers about to get lynched for creating depression.

Swine flu magically appears and large crowds of e.g. protesters are conventiently banned.

On the other hand, we ARE due for a major flu epidemic.

If you sealed yourself into a modern house, you'd probably get killed by all the off-gassing furniture, carpets, flooring, chipboard etc.
