I was a little surprised to see this headline just now when I switched my computer on - oil prices don't seem to be "soaring" - they've gone up a little bit. What's going on?

Oil has gone up a little, but the main reason is that oil is traded and priced in US$ but we buy petrol at filling stations in Sterling.
Sterling has deppreciated considerably versus the US dollar, from roughly $2=£1 down to about $1-40=£1.
