Ideas for an unattended acre?

AFAIK grafted walnuts are about £40 each. The Ash are about 25p.

I just don't have enough cash to do walnuts at the moment.

I am hoping to be eating the hazels, apples and yams within four years..

PS Anyone know about how to graft Walnuts?

I have seen a site selling grafted walnuts for £25 each. £40 is a rip off.

I am currently grafting my own chestnut trees with scions from the fridge.

If all succeeds it should end up costing about £1.50 overall for each tree.

I am now in a similar situation to you, in that I have a site ready for planting up.

I plan on growing-

6 chestnut trees
6 walnut trees
6 cobnuts
2 dwarf apple trees and 2 non-dwarf apple trees
2 damson trees

and in the wood section-

oak
hazel
wild crabapple
wild service
alder
blackthorn

Well I hope you don't have any grey squirrels. These evil vermin decimate hazelnut crops. Before they arrived, people in these islands used to have a substantial part of the diet made up by hazelnuts.

You can't keep them out, so look upon Grey Squirrels as a meat crop.

I'm not trying to piss on your candle, I just wonder whether we actually have 10 years until TSHTF.

I doubt we do. Regardless of peak oil, there is hyperinflation programmed into the system starting next year. It will be interesting to see what happens to he UK as nat gas depletes, North Sea oil finally runs out, The City of London tanks, hyperinflation kicks in AND global peak oil hits four years later.
