Anti-terror laws were used to seize Icelandic assets in UK

Maybe others here knew this, but I didn't:

"In a bid to claw back some of the money, the British government seized Icelandic assets in the UK using anti-terrorism laws."

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7667920.stm

I am now well and truly convinced that the terror laws were put in place to deal with the social fall-out from PO. To some extent I think the same applies to the terror threat itself.

I am not sure about your last paragraph, but I thought that it was pretty disgusting. And it provides an excellent example of "legislation creep" and why we should fear draconian laws, however limited, because they will tend to be used outside of their limits,

Peter.

Well said Ludwig. I have long since been convinced that recent terrorist plots here and in the US have been fake and the government has been using them to prepare for a peak and post peak oil world. That and to justify going to war on foreign soil.

Yes, I'd say "fake", "actively encouraged" or conservatively "definitely not discouraged".

Until a year ago I was sufficiently ignorant of geopolitics and of the seriousness of the energy crisis to regard "terror sceptics" as cranks. I've now read enough to change my mind - nor just by hotheads like Mike Ruppert (who I do admire for his moral courage), but also by quieter voices like Richard Heinberg, whose sceptical comments re. 9/11 in "The Party's Over" seemed to go unnoticed by most readers.

I particularly like the way that the Icelanders took it as a personal slur and raised objections to being labelled as terrorists :D

One of my colleagues the other day, who it would appear had invested unwisely in Icelandic banks, went off on a witless anti-Icelandic rant within earshot of another colleague who's half-Icelandic.

If this is the reaction of educated people now, I fear for what the reaction will be of the masses when TS really HTF :(

Don't worry about their reaction. I am quite sure when TSHTF that plenty of legislation exists to 'calm' them down. Children of Men, Soylent Green etc.
Talking to my local bobby about this a little while back - how was he going to morally justify some of the things he was going to have to do? Turns out job security overcomes personal qualms.

From what I've heard, although it's part of the Anti-terrorism, Crime and Security Act 2001, the part used wasn't actually related to terrorism. So it seems like it's just that terrorism is in the name of the act that got people excited. I know I heard it on Radio 4, but can't remember who said it.

Iceland knows damn well we are not accusing them of being terrorists. They can stop playing dumb.

If they are going to default - they should expect nation states to use their powers (under whatever name) to seize assets and try and protect depositors.

If I get into debt 8 times my income and then I lose my job, you can bet your ass my assets would be seized!

Could you not say that the Icelanders are terrorized by debts? Or at least that they live in terror? Anti-terror laws should be applicable then? Or have I missed something?

I think we should put a 200-mile exclusion zone round this thread :D

You wait, you smug git. With 75% of Europe's credit card debt, Britain is going to be hit just as hard, just in a slightly different way. I wonder who you're going to be blaming then?

I suspect from your recent posts that you're just the sort of voter the BNP is targeting: ignorant, cocksure and always ready to kick someone else when they're down.

Yep, my conjecture that global grumpiness is now increasing is looking valid ...

We might have to send in a peacekeeping force too at this rate...
