US debt and its consequences

What can we do to change the minds of decision makers and people in general to actually do something about preparing for the forthcoming economic/energy crises (the ones after this one!)?

This thread at TOD gives a very frightening view of US debt and its consequences

It discusses definite actions by foriegners that could bring the US crashing down It doesn't even mention any of the accidents that could do the same.
