These are intelligent, informed people. They know alright, but what can they do about it? It is the man-in-the-street - or woman-in-the-shoe-shop - who refuses to accept the constraints on aspirations.

As a woman who frequently finds herself in a shoe-shop, I resent that last comment. I am quite capable of understanding constraints, in that if the said shoe-shop has nothing in a size 8, I go to another shop
What I want to know is, who is this man in the street, and why isn't he in a bike-shop or something?

I saw him just yesterday (twice, in fact): he was riding around here in York, on a marvellous electric trike. He had a flat 'at on and all. Would love to post a pic but I just wasn't fast enough with my camera.

Well, I was going to put "man-in-the-pub" but the last time I saw him he was past caring. In fact I was thinking of writing a novel about him, called Collapse.
