I currently donate to Sustrans.
I took a flight recently and feel compelled to donate to one of the following charities. Any suggestions?
Soil Association (
http://www.soilassociation.org.uk )
Woodland trust (
http://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk )
Future Forests (
http://www.futureforests.com )
Climate Care (

Slip the money into a brown envelope and slide it behind the cistern , second toilet on the left in Paddington station.
I'll make sure it goes to a good cause.

I don't think much of these schemes. Think about them in terms of carbon footprinting - if everyone flew and planted trees to compensate we'd need three planets for all the saplings!

I prefer to support the WFA
http://www.wholesomefood.org all about natural growing, building local communities and economies and most importantly reduction in food miles. They don't support unlimited imports and food miles as some other organisations do seem to do.

I agree with Damian on the tree front, and also, the air pollution is happening now whereas the benefit gained by planting trees is time delayed.
How about sending money here
http://re-cycle.org/home/Donate . Merlin is a lovely man who I met via Rob newman's PO talk here in Brighton and he attended EoI recently. It would giving to 'one of our own' and providing very low carbon transport for others who really could do with cheap travel. Just a thought.
I don't have time to read the other links just now but I'll come back to it.

Don't give money to the Soil Association. Some of their bigwigs recently flew to America on Eos, that new airline flying between London and New York which has about 50 business class only seats.
A pathetic waste of kerosene!

Perks, like the poor, are with us always. Judge not least ye be judged. As environmental sins go thats not exactly a hanging offence.
Does the Soil Association do a good job of maintaining organic standards? Do I agree with their policies and how they carry them out? Are they
generally efficient in their use of money? What percentage goes on head office admin and what is spent in the field on projects? (4% -not excessive compared to some'charities') Those are the questions one really ought to ask before deciding whether to contribute to them.
I can think of much worse charities to contribute to.. for instance the RSPCA... they really dont
need your money . Generally from what little I know about them I think the Soil Association do a good job.
