United States Presidential Election 2024

What can we do to change the minds of decision makers and people in general to actually do something about preparing for the forthcoming economic/energy crises (the ones after this one!)?

I blame lack of parallax compensation in the rifle scope, at that distance you'd need it.
I wonder if you are referring to compensation provided by the Parallax Corporation?

Trump is now smirking like the cat that got the cream! One might almost think
the whole thing had been staged as a well choreographed political stunt! Or is that too tinfoil cranium cover?

Everything points to this being a lone wolf who encountered a disorganized and poorly managed security operation. The only person I might have sympathy for would be the lackey who should have put his foot down and said to Trump "We have multiple reports of a potentially hostile agent- We are going to have to cancel this election rally until we catch them". I can imagine what Trump's reply would have been.

While I'm here reporting on the Republican convention in Milwaukee, I’ve been contacting Democrats back in Washington DC to take the temperature within the party and ask: is Joe Biden really getting closer to stepping aside as the Democratic candidate?

One told me “the mood is funereal” and said “we are all waiting for the inevitable decision”.

Others say this is no longer about whether Biden would lose to Donald Trump. The worry now is that if stays at the top of the ticket, he will drag down other Democratic candidates and could hand the Republicans majorities in the House and Senate too.

If that happens, this would allow Trump to pass almost any legislation he likes.
This is now painfully embarrassing. It has reached the point where the very fact that Biden cannot see the writing on the wall is all the proof anybody needs that he's unfit for office. And the longer it continues, the more damage is being done.

Biden will be gone at the weekend...
The big Q is whether the Democrats can come up with a strong enough opponent for Trump quickly enough...
Time is very much against them...

Surely in a great, freedom loving country of 333 million sane, rational folk they can find somebody?
Is that too much to ask?

Joe Biden withdraws from US presidential election race:

As expected - it was inevitable...
Now they need to unify around an alternative extremely quickly - it might still just be possible to stop Trump...

Expect only a woman can beat Trump at this stage - but it's a tall order!

Hillary couldn't manage it. Whether Kamala Harris can do it is anyone's guess. I suppose she is as different to Trump as it is possible to get so it might help.

Trump doesn't have a majority of US support, and due to demographics probably never will.
What he does have is a loyal support base that is virtually guaranteed to turn out and vote...

The democrat vote seems much softer and prone to stay at home, that's why they need a strong candidate who can energise...
Don't know much about the views of Kamala Harris, all I know is that she's coloured and a woman..
She's been very quiet as VP, but I'm sure that Americans have more insight (VT doesn't post any more)
Suspect there will be at least 1 challenger to her.

Just when you thought US political discord couldn't get anymore dysfunctional, today a lot of folks are claiming Biden not standing for re-election is a coup! Absolute nonsense. What's going on there? Some kind of social hysteria?

Why can only a woman beat Trump? From my perspective, the Democrats appear to be about to make a monumental mistake. What they need to be thinking right now is one thing only: Who is the best candidate to beat Trump? What they are actually thinking seems to be "It's time for a black-asian female President!" They are thinking about which candidate they would like to see win, for their reasons, instead of thinking about who is most likely to win over the swing voters in swing states who will actually decide the result.

I don't know much about US politics. Maybe Kamala Harris is the best candidate. If so, then people should be saying she's the best candidate, not that America needs a female president [because that would be a great victory in the culture wars]. Surely all Trump needs to do is paint a picture that this is indeed what has happened -- that the Harris was chosen because of her identity rather than her ability -- and he's laughing all the way back to the Whitehouse.

Looks like it is a done deal. Harris vs Trump then. I guess Trump is probably favourite.

Bookies and polls have it for Trump - I'm not so sure though. The MAGA base is loud and determined but it's still quite possible for Harris to win. Better to wait for a month or so of Harris campaigning, and announce a running mate. She might cut through.

I really hope Trump doesn't chicken out of the debates, pretty sure he'd come off worse.

Harris raises $200m in a week and closes poll gap - she's going to win this. When I posted on Wed she was 4/1 with the bookies. That's now 6/4.
