Please don't confuse an anti genocide protest vote with an anti Jewish people vote. I think the labour party was not the obvious target for such a campaign, the government which actually had the policy of supporting such brutal actions seemed to be overlooked. I guess people with a conscience knew they were beyond shamingmr brightside wrote: ↑06 Jul 2024, 14:40 It shocks me that communities of people will vote based on the interests of a group of people half way round the world. They aren't voting for more NHS dentists or a massive mosque building scheme, it seems they have voted for the creation of a new sovereign Muslim state. There's something unsettling about this.

The final result is in, and it went to the LD. I dont know why it was delayed so long, it wasnt that close a result.

Re: General Election 2024
There was a discrepancy between the number of votes cast and the number of votes counted, and the first recount didn't resolve it. Some ballot papers must have got lost somewhere. The SNP conceded the seat several hours before the declaration.

This grouping will be in interesting counterbalance to Reform...
Re: General Election 2024
According to the Guardian, between 2019 and now, the Muslim vote for Labour went down from 80% to 20%, whilst the Jewish vote went up from 7% to 40%. Given the far higher numbers of Muslims than Jews in the UK, this is obviously a net vote loser. However, the majority of Muslims live in cities which are already Labour strongholds, whereas a lot of Jewish people live in more Tory leaning southern constituencies, so it is possible that Labour won more seats from the Jewish vote swing than they lost from the Muslim one. I also suspect the Greens did well from Muslim protest votes

Re: General Election 2024
I was very wrong in thinking labour would not take all that many seats from SNP. Can understand the reaction against the carry on by SNP, "mobilehomegate" etc but It makes one wonder how so many previous supporters of independence so effortlessly shited there support to a pro union party at the drop of a hat. Very different story in NI and not much seems to have changed in Wales.
Gratifying number of Portillo moments made staying up worthwhile. Whatever else Starmer & Co does or doesn't do it looks as if the political relationship between UK and Ireland is set to improve hugely which is no bad thing.
The RTE coverage couldn't help smirking at the tory's discomfort whilst CH4 seemed to provide the best UK coverage apart from the creepy, Dracula like, Osbourne and his bosom buddy Mr Balls. Surgeon looked gutted but of course nothing to do with her!

Re: General Election 2024
Scottish independence is dead for a generation, and the SNP aren't much use for anything else. It wasn't just the scandals and failures of governance, but the bankruptcy of their message. Swinney has gone back to saying "If we get a majority then it will trigger talks on another referendum", as if mis-using the word "trigger" is somehow going to transform the reality that all imaginable future Westminster governments will respond with an implacable "no". In the end, their message was taking their own voters for fools.

Reform UK under pressure to prove all its candidates were real people:
https://www.theguardian.com/politics/ar ... eal-people
Mark Matlock stood for Reform in Clapham & Brixton Hill, gaining nearly 2,000 votes
The problem being - he appears to have been an AI-generated person - aka he might not exist.
Mark's website went offline as soon as the vote ended - but thanks to the Wayback Machine, there's a copy of it below:
https://lnkd.in/eJHazSnx
It's hard for anyone online to prove this beyond doubt, but this hasn't been the only case of Reform candidates looking slightly suspicious.
On 'X' many people have come forward sharing similar stories of candidates, often with websites or social profiles that don't even show a photo of the candidate (see South Dorset candidate Morgan Young).
Someone on 'X' suggested this is a practise termed as "pre-market testing" - whereby a business might advertise a non-existent product to gauge levels of interest. In this case they might not have had a real candidate to put forward, so they invented one instead
The investigative media outlet Byline Times and their Chief Reporter Josiah Mortimer covered this story a few days ago...
Apparently there's also a thread on Reddit...

Dr Jordan Peterson claims burning fossil fuels is GOOD for environment because it's making the planet 'greener'... what's the truth?

World-renowned psychologist and culture war crusader Dr Jordan Peterson is not afraid to voice his opinions — however unpopular they may be. The Canadian academic has been both praised and criticized for his take on trans medical issues, COVID-19 travel restrictions and Russia's invasion of Ukraine. But his latest claim might be the most contrarian yet.
In a podcast with UK politician Nigel Farage this week, Dr Peterson said burning fossil fuels was good for the environment. 'The influx of carbon dioxide from the fossil fuel industry into the atmosphere,' he said, 'is actually a net ecological good.' Dr Peterson pointed to NASA data that showed some parts of the planet are thriving: 'In the last 20 years alone, the planet has greened by an area factor of 20 percent,' he said during Wednesday's podcast.

Re: General Election 2024
Has this got something to do with the 2024 election? Farage isn't responsible for things said by other people on his podcast. There are climate change deniers, and Peterson is one of them.Mark wrote: ↑08 Jul 2024, 23:52 Dr Jordan Peterson claims burning fossil fuels is GOOD for environment because it's making the planet 'greener'... what's the truth?

It just helps to build the picture on Reform - fake candidates, climate deniers funded by fossil fuel companies, Putin supporters, alongside all the other things on their charge sheet...
These things need calling out.

Re: General Election 2024
No it doesn't. Jordan Peterson isn't part of Reform, and doesn't speak for them.
Your "calling out" needs calling out. If you want to attack Reform then stick to attacking Reform instead of trying to sling mud via guilt-by-association. Reform have plenty of problems which do need to be dealt with, but Jordan Peterson isn't one of them. He's not even British. These things need calling out.

Re: General Election 2024
Agreed, we should judge Reform on their statements/actions.
But we should also be aware of who they associate with as reading between the lines can often reveal more.
The fact that GB News is their media outlet of choice says an awful lot...

Re: General Election 2024
Greens in Australia and a lesser extent NZ are already getting to be a Muslim party. I think in the UK they might strike out on their own and form their own party but there is talk in Australia from a Muslim former Labor Senator of them doing the same thing rather than taking over the Green Party.
I see Sir Peter Bottomley lost his seat. I remember the anagrams of his wife's name were a source of amusement at my workplace in the late 1990s.
On the burning of fossil fuels being good it probably is on a 2000 year timescale as it may avert an ice age. But on a 100 year timescale it is very bad. Maybe Jordan Peterson could be quizzed on what timescale he meant. I for one think Farage in Parliament will be a good thing as he can have his say and be held to account.
