Here's an interesting page from the DTI oil and gas website.

A lot of this is a responce to the farmers' and hauliers' blockades of a few years ago whensupermarkets were reduced to a few hours food supply for the nation. Instead of doing something about supermarkets screwing dairy farmers into the ground and foreign hauliers coming over here with much cheaper fuel and undercutting our own hauliers, they have devised a way to stop any further protests having any effect.

Not a good idea. Sunday is the quietest day of the week: is it better to drive on near-empty roads on a Sunday or congested roads on a weekday?SILVERHARP2 wrote: -ban motorway driving at weekends maybe even all driving on Sundays

Used to be this way, but Sundays in Bury seem to be just as busy as any other day nowadays.WolfattheDoor wrote:Not a good idea. you can argue that one but how many people drive 100miles at the weekend just to go to Ikea etc. the only two mechanisms are price or rationing, it will be interesting to see how it plays out
I can imagine a blend of high prices and QUASI rationing working.you can argue that one but how many people drive 100miles at the weekend just to go to Ikea etc. the only two mechanisms are price or rationing,
We could require the filling stations to:
- have only one pump running
- to work restrictive hours
- to require cash (in Euros or Escudos)
- to have slow feed rates on their pumps
- to have leaky pipes which smear your hands and showes with traces of stinky fuel
- to play Val Doonican tracks very loudly whilst you wait
- to have the manhole covers over their sewage pipes replaced by metal grilles
People just popping out for something trivial would think "Sod it, I can't face spending 20 minutes at the petrol station".
Bingo - one or more journeys saved.
