Conservative party/opposition watch

Re: Conservative government watch
Bill passed this stage with most right wing rebels abstaining. Both sides say they that their positions are unchanged and will vote accordingly in the next vote in January.
Re: Conservative government watch
Braverman was sacked over this. Jenrick resigned over this.
Both sat on their hands and abstained in the actual vote....
In the end, neither had the courage of their convictions..., or anybody else for that matter...

Re: Conservative government watch
I am not reading much into that. It is only a second reading, and they have made clear that they decided this was not the point in the proceedings to try to challenge the bill. The underlying impasse has not gone away.
The current situation has already degenerated into a re-run of the end of May's time in office, when she was trying to defend a middle way that was untenable and ended up just trying to survive from one week to the next, without ever resolving the real issue.

Re: Conservative government watch
Sunak has confirmed the election will be next year. I think now they're resigned to losing, and that the longer they leave it the worse it is likely to get. May or June is my bet.

Yep, I expecting a Spring election. Likely to lose another couple of by elections. There is an issue passing new legislation in the fifth year whereby an uncooperative Lords can basically hold up new legislation and run the clock down - if they try and hang on until Jan-25 it'll just be a mess and ultimately deliver an even worse result.UndercoverElephant wrote: ↑19 Dec 2023, 15:43 Sunak has confirmed the election will be next year. Re: Conservative government watch
I'm wondering if they'll delay as much as possible, as inflation is falling, markets rising etc might give them some hope that people have short memories and will vote for them once more? Then again, a lot of business leaders are warming to the idea of Labour government. Guess we'll find out .....

Re: Conservative government watch
I don't think many tories believe their chances will improve if the election is delayed until the autumn or later. They are beyond the hoping stage. Why prolong their own misery?Forever_Winter wrote: ↑25 Dec 2023, 11:33 I'm wondering if they'll delay as much as possible, as inflation is falling, markets rising etc might give them some hope that people have short memories and will vote for them once more? Spring Budget announced for 6th March '24. They'll be hoping inflation will be down a bit more by the then as well so you're probably right about a Spring election.clv101 wrote: ↑19 Dec 2023, 22:21Yep, I expecting a Spring election. Re: Conservative government watch
Can anyone else remember the last time a Tory MP resigned on a point of principal? An MP resigns over his government tearing up it's legal commitment to reach net zero carbon emissions and all the media want to talk about is the timing of the next general election.

So it's going to be votes bought by tax cuts, paid for by cuts in public spending!

Bribe the voters just before, hope enough of them forget the shitshow they've subjected us to, and pump the media for all they're worth....
Personally, I think the outcome will be a lot closer than many think...., I'm going for a very narrow Labour win, or possibly a hung parliament....
Re: Conservative government watch
I think the result will be a lot closer than the current polling suggests - but I still still a healthy Labour majority of ~50.
The reason for this is that I think the Tory campaign is going to be more effective than Labour's. It's going to be the most dishonest, manipulative, divisive, damaging campaign British politics has seen, but ultimately more effective for the Tories. Not enough to prevent a Labour win, but enough to prevent a 100+ majority landslide. A lot can still happen/change before we eventually get the election though.
