It's about the same as the EU mandating a percentage of biodiesel in fossil diesel. It is made from palm oil from plantations on clear felled rainforest land which , apart from the ecological damage, emitted the same CO2 in their destruction as the palm oil in biodiesel will prevent over the next 70 years.

It like the stupid green waste recycling targets that exclude composting and require that green waste is collected from the home to be processed centrally.

40% of the rape grown in the UK (figure from several years ago, so may be different now) is used for bio-diesel. With a maximum gain of about 10% it is a huge waste of land and destroyer of ecosystems, just to meet a target.

There are all sorts of problems with targets. On the other hand the feed in tariff was I thought quite successful.

FIT would only ever work for a small proportion of installations. As Germany discovered, it gets very expensive, and everyone has to pay so the early “investors� get an inflation beating payback. It fails if everyone was to get into the scheme.

The idea is to reduce the money cost so that it becomes more cost effective. I think that has worked.
