Cumbria's steepest hydro electric scheme nears completion

Cumbria's steepest hydro electric scheme on the mountain slopes above Thirlmere reservoir, is nearing completion. Fisherplace Hydro, on the banks of Helvellyn, has a 2 in 1 gradient, and once live, will be able to generate enough electricity to power 700 homes.

In the greater scheme of things, power for 700 homes is not that much, but every little helps and this should be a reliable and low carbon source for decades to come.

No mention is made of any water storage or controllability, so presumably the output is about 700KW continuous. Certainly worth having.
7MW on demand for the evening peak would however have been a great deal more valuable.

700KW 24/7 has saved the capital cost of building 700KW of CCGT capacity.

7MW for two and a bit hours would have saved the capital cost of 7MW of CCGT plant.
