Hydroelectric turbines could soon power Parliament

How far can the power of the sea contribute to the energy needs of the UK?

Hydroelectric turbines could soon power Parliament

Hydroelectric turbines could soon power Parliament by harnessing the tidal power of the Thames: Commons speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle puts forward radical proposal to help reduce energy costs:

Typical MPs - happy to find money for a vanity project for the Houses of Parliament....
But ignore the much more economically viable Swansea Bay project....

If memory serves me correct the old London Bridge - a little downstream from the Houses of Parliament - incorporated a tidal mill in it.
According to this website there were four, some used for pumping water to the City of London.
1700: This wheel was built by George Sorocold, c1700. It was 20 feet in diameter and had 26 blades 14 feet long, reinforced by four rims or rings. It drove eight pumps by means of crankshafts and rocking beams and could raise more than 2,500 tons of water 120 feet high per day. The water wheel could be raised or lowered as the level of the Thames rose or fell because the axles were mounted on pivoted levers.
Around 300kWh per day according to my calculations.
Every little helps I suppose.

There's a new tidal flow/river current turbine being tested at Richmond which could power Parliament. It would have to be scaled up from this prototype though.
