All-solid-state battery cells

Lithium-Ion Battery Inventor Introduces New Technology for Fast-Charging, Noncombustible Batteries:
https://news.utexas.edu/2017/02/28/good ... echnology/

John B. Goodenough invented the lithium battery. In 2017, at the age of 94, he unveiled a new, ultra-efficient, low cost battery which uses a sodium or lithium coated glass electrolyte. At the time he said that the new glass battery could dwarf his original invention and allow electric cars to go three times the distance, and recharge in minutes instead of hours. These batteries are also far safer as they won't explode and can operate in sub-zero temperatures. He believes the new glass battery will power our future solar powered and electric vehicles, homes and industries.

There are now several companies working on solid state batteries but they are still a long way off being available. Quantum Scape, Solid Power and SES to name a few. Basically the design was a solid electrolyte chemistry which is very hard to manufacture in lab settings, even more so commercially. The issue to overcome is the design has metallic lithium at both the anode and the cathode which is a big 'no-no' in the world of batteries.....

So..., are solid-state battery cells the future ?
Or the battery equivalent of nuclear fusion ?

Solid state batteries are nothing new, used until recently for very high voltages at minute currents. One has been operating for about 170 years.

I am however very doubtful as to the prospects for high energy density rechargeable batteries
