Inside a smart meter

Post by fuzzy »

Big clive got his hands on a real smart meter. Watch it before it gets pulled:

vastly overengineered garbage designed to play up, full of electrolytics and a lithium cell. Plenty maintenance to skim off by the utilities.

Agree, too complex, too many life limited components.
And I don't trust the design to reliably carry full load.

One of the few merits of smart meters is that they do have the ability to detect abstraction and hopefully to deter same.

I still suspect that the smart meter project will be dropped.

"following the successful trial of smart meters, it has been decided that a new and more challenging series of future targets are to be set.
We are committed to ensuring that 99% of consumers will be equipped with improved smart meters by 2038"

Thereby quietly dropping the present target without actually saying so. The new target being far enough in the future that no one need worry about it yet.
"Installers and owners of emergency diesels must assume that they will have to run for a week or more"

A lot of people here got 'smart' meters for water too, a couple of years ago. Waste of time, energy, resources, plus they'll need their batteries replacing relatively soon, if they're not totally ruined by water ingress.
I experience pleasure and pains, and pursue goals in service of them, so I cannot reasonably deny the right of other sentient agents to do the same - Steven Pinker
