I am writing on this forum to raise awareness regarding a very important issue in the UK. Many consumers are unaware of this, but the truth is that the cost of the food they buy is much higher than the retail price. To be more specific, UK consumers pay twice the selling price for their food without realising it.

The additional costs incurred by consumers are known as hidden costs. These costs are generated by the UK food sector through soil degradation, environmental pollution, biodiversity loss and food-related ill-health. Consumers pay for the hidden costs in the form of environmental taxation, water charges and private health insurances.

I think that anyone who frequents this board on a regular basis will be well aware of this, although perhaps not the extent, as most of the items noted in your article are referred to on a regular basis here.

Even the government is now realising that we are paying many of those costs and that they impinge on the increasing unafordability of the NHS and social care and are starting to address some of the issues.

Indeed, I have tried to keep the infographic and my little article here as simple as possible. However, the report that the infographic is based on is extremely comprehensive and it is definitely worth reading to get a deeper understanding of the topic.
